Edmonton author turns a 4-book German translation deal into a 5-book deal

Most authors dream of having their works translated into foreign languages, and I am one of them. There is an immense thrill and satisfaction in knowing my books are being read by people across the world.

Over the past couple of years I've seen Chinese translations of WHALE SONG and CHILDREN OF THE FOG, a Turkish translation of THE RIVER (GIZEMLI NEHIR), a Spanish translation of my nonfiction marketing book, HOW I MADE OVER $42,000 IN 1 MONTH SELLING MY KINDLE eBOOKS, and most recently a German translation for my #1 bestseller CHILDREN OF THE FOG.

DES NEBELS KINDER (CHILDREN OF THE FOG) was released on June 10 and was published by Amazon Crossing, a division of Amazon Publishing. It immediately made 7+ Top 100 lists on Amazon.de. And German readers are loving it, as evidenced by the 5-star reviews it's receiving.

But my most amazing book deal is with a small independent publishing company, Luzifer-Verlag, which is owned by Steffen Janssen. Steffen had contacted me 2 years ago to inquire about German rights for THE RIVER. I found his email a week ago while cleaning out my email folders. I almost deleted it! Thank God I didn't. My finger hovered over the "delete" button. But a thought crossed my mind. Whatever had happened with this? I couldn't recall why it hadn't gone through.

I immediately emailed Steffen to see if he was still interested. I mentioned I was just releasing book 3 in my Divine Trilogy and that DES NEBELS KINDER had just released. The reply I received stunned me. An offer! For THE RIVER and the Divine Trilogy. Within a few days that deal was secured, and we are underway to publishing these 4 titles in ebook and paperback.

But wait! There's more! lol

I had one other title that I KNEW would do well in the German market--SUBMERGED. It has cool tie-ins or connections to CHILDREN OF THE FOG, although this is not a series. And with DES NEBELS KINDER doing so well, there was no doubt in my mind that SUBMERGED would sell in Germany.

So with some hesitation, I contacted Steffen and offered him SUBMERGED, letting him know its connection to DES NEBELS KINDER. And he made an offer.

It is rare enough for an author to receive a 2-3 book deal, but even more rare to secure a 5-book deal. And from what I've seen so far, these German translations are going to take that country by storm.

As I recently posted on Facebook:
Dear Germany and German readers:
Watch out for the Cheryl Kaye Tardif invasion!!!!!!!!!! I'm on my way!!!

Bestselling Authors Theresa Ragan and Cheryl Kaye Tardif Compare Their Experiences with Foreign Translations

On June 10th Amazon Crossing, a division of Amazon Publishing, released two German translations: SPIELZUG INS GLÜCK by New York Times/USA Today bestselling author, Theresa Ragan, and DES NEBELS KINDER by international bestselling author, Cheryl Kaye Tardif. Today these authors are going to share their experiences with foreign translations by interviewing each other.

Theresa: Do you mind telling us a little bit about the process of getting your book translated? For instance, when were you approached, and how long did it take to get your book translated?

Cheryl: On August 24, 2011, I was contacted online by an agent who had a client that wanted the Turkish rights to THE RIVER. That deal went ahead and GIZEMLI NEHIR was released about a year later as well. It was actually prominently displayed at the Frankfurt Book Fair. In March 2012, I signed a two-book deal with a Chinese company for the translations of CHILDREN OF THE FOG and WHALE SONG. I believe it took about a year for the ebook editions to come out. However, they are illustrated inside and much went into their production.

On October 18th, 2013, I was contacted by a representative from Amazon Crossing. Here’s what she said: “We’re launching an invite-only beta program focused on literary translation for select KDP authors to translate their works into German. We think your title, Children of the Fog, would be a good fit for this program.” I was elated! It took just under 8 months before DES NEBELS KINDER was released.

I was paid an advance for my German and Turkish translations. I received no advance for the Chinese editions, but I did not have to pay them. I did pay for the Spanish translation of my non-fiction marketing book.

How about you, Theresa? When were you approached, and how long did it take?

Theresa: In October, 2012, Amazon Crossing translated Abducted which I had sold to Thomas & Mercer. Abducted, IM NETZ DES SPINNENMANNS: THRILLER, hit #1 on Amazon.de and stayed there for over a month. The book did so well I decided to look into finding a German translator and having my KDP books translated. I ended up finding the Libelli Agency in March 2013 and I signed a contract to have them translate HAVING MY BABY, a contemporary romance. Nine months later, in November 2013, Having My Baby (Plötzlich Vater) was released. The entire process for that one title cost me a little over $8,000, but at 70% royalties, I made my initial investment back in the first week! Getting 70% royalties is nice, but it takes money to make money.

By the time Amazon Crossing approached me in July, 2013, I had already signed with the Libelli Agency to translate two of my books. Since I like to try everything, I signed three of my books with Amazon Crossing. I signed a contract in October and eight months later, on June 10th, SPIELZUG INS GLÜCK was released! Two more books are coming soon.

Cheryl, what was your first reaction to seeing the cover? Did you ask for any changes?

Cheryl: My first reaction was absolute joy when I saw the cover for DES NEBELS KINDER. Like most authors, I am very particular about my covers, and since Amazon Crossing was new to me, I was hoping I’d get a cover I liked. Not only do I “like” it, I LOVE it! They perfectly captured an element of the story, the mood and the atmosphere. Then there’s the way they stacked my name. Funny thing, I had once stacked my name like they did, and for some reason I didn’t like it, so I changed it. Yet on the cover of DES NEBELS KINDER it works. Maybe it’s the font, I don’t know. The cover was perfect, so I had no reason to ask for any changes. I am also very happy with the covers for my Chinese, Spanish and Turkish translations.

Theresa, how do you feel about your cover? Did you suggest any changes or tweaks?

Theresa: My biggest problem with being an independent author is choosing a great cover. I go back and forth and I swear I can’t always tell a great cover from an okay cover. It’s so subjective, in my opinion. Anyhow, I didn’t like the font on one of the books, so we played with that for a while and then I wasn’t sure about the color of the font, so I ended up choosing black for the author name. I am so original. Ha! Lucky for me, Amazon Crossing is easy to work with. And patient!

Did you do anything different with the editing process, Cheryl? How involved were you in the process?

Cheryl: Amazon Crossing was very easy to work with and very diligent about keeping my story intact. We had a minor challenge in one chapter where we had to come up with different items as the first letter of each was to spell out a message. But we were able to agree on those items. And there was a poem in the English version that had to be replaced with a different poem so that everything would flow. Other than these, I left it up to my translator. Trust goes a long way to making the process easy. All in all, I would have no problem with them translating any of my books.

With the Turkish and Spanish translations I trusted the process. With the Chinese ebooks I did have to explain a few times what a character was doing or saying. I had a fair amount of input into the editing and the creation of the illustrations, which are beautiful.

How about you, Theresa? Was your editing process challenging?

Theresa: The editing process for all of my translations have been fairly simple and straightforward. Like you, I did have one problem in that one of my characters, a small child, had a lisp. That lisp did not translate well, so we had to do some tweaking to make it make sense for German readers. I believe the character ended up having a problem with “S” instead of “L”. To tell you the truth, any of these foreign books could be someone else’s story altogether. I don’t mean to scare anyone. I took two years of German when I was very young, but unless you are Tina Folsom and you speak the language, how can you be sure every sentence is your own? It’s called trust. I trust the people at Amazon Crossing and I trust the people at the Libelli Agency. I trust them to care about the books they put out and their reputation. So, overall, it’s been fun.

Is there anything else you’d like to add, Cheryl?

Cheryl: Just my extreme gratefulness to my translator, Ingrid Könemann-Yarnell, and my Amazon Crossing representative, Katrin Mueller, for making my first German translation such an enjoyable experience. I hope to have more works with Amazon Crossing soon. I love that my works are available to those who speak/read other languages. Now if only I had some French translations—half of Quebec might buy them (all the Tardifs). J

Any last words, Theresa?

This has been fun, Cheryl. I’m so glad we’ve had a chance to meet and blog together. I must say I do love your cover for Des Nebels Kinder. Very eerie…which I love. Congratulations on your success in the foreign markets. I would also like to thank Katrin Mueller with Amazon Crossing, and Birte and Ute with the Libelli Agency. I couldn’t have asked for better people to work with.

One last thing…I also had a book translated in Spanish. The book is doing great. I have 15 five stars, which tells me that my translator did a great job. También es hijo mío has been doing well in the U.S. and Spain. For anyone interested in having a novel translated in Spanish, feel free to contact Angeles Aragón. Her website is http://www.elregalodesuvida.com. You can email Angeles at geleraragon@gmail.com and ask her for a quote on what it would cost to have your book translated.

GIZEMLI NEHIR, Turkish translation of my thriller THE RIVER is now available in Turkey

Introducing the Turkish translation of THE RIVER...
A couple of days ago I found a package in the mail from the literary agency in Turkey that had handled the contracts for a Turkish translation of my techno-thriller, THE RIVER. Inside the package were two paperbacks of the newly released GIZEMLI NEHIR--my translation.

To say that I'm thrilled is an understatement! I had very much the same reaction as I'd had when my very first novel was published and in my hands. I was awed, excited, proud, and in disbelief. GIZEMLI NEHIR marks another highlight in my career as a writer--and in my life.

Though I don't know anyone other than the literary agent in Turkey, I can't wait to hear from a reader in Turkey who has read this translation.

Thank you to Eftalya Kitap, book publisher in Turkey, for taking a chance on my novel.

And a special thank you to Filiz Karaman at Nurichan Kesim Literary Agency for making this deal happen.

GIZEMLI NEHIR...

THE RIVER television series and the bestselling thriller THE RIVER by Cheryl Kaye tardif

I'm really anticipating the new ABC television series, THE RIVER. Why? Because I love a thrilling adventure and because it is very close in plot to my bestselling technothriller by the same name. I've watched the trailer, read the synopsis and found the plotin this series to be compelling and suspenseful. I can't wait to see what happens.

Here's part of ABC's official press release:
"The River" follows the story of wildlife expert and TV personality Emmet Cole. Emmet set course around the world with his wife, Tess, and son, Lincoln, while filming what would become one of the most popular shows in television. After he goes missing deep in the Amazon, his family, friends and crew set out on a mysterious and deadly journey to find him. Famed explorer Dr. Emmet Cole (Bruce Greenwood) went looking for magic deep in the uncharted Amazon and never returned. The shocking truth about his disappearance is out there, somewhere, just waiting to be discovered.
To the millions of kids who grew up watching his nature show, Dr. Cole was a hero. To his own son, Lincoln (Joe Anderson), he was more of an enigma. Now, six months after he vanished, Lincoln is finally ready to bury the past when Dr. Cole's emergency beacon suddenly goes off.
At the urging of his mother, Tess (Leslie Hope), Lincoln reluctantly joins her on a search for his father. To fund the rescue, they agree to let Dr. Cole's cagey ex-producer, Clark (Paul Blackthorne), film the mission documentary-style. The mixed crew of old friends and new acquaintances includes the sexy and resourceful Lena (Eloise Mumford), loyal mechanic Emilio (Daniel Zacapa) and lethal bodyguard Captain Kurt Brynildson (Thomas Kretschmann).
Check out the trailer:

In celebration of this new TV series--even though I have absolutely nothing to do with it and it's NOT based on my novel--I will be giving away copies of my thriller THE RIVER on Amazon tomorrow.

You can download a free copy of my bestselling thriller THE RIVER tonight after midnight and up to tomorrow, February 8th, until about midnight.

You can read this on your PC, laptop, smartphone, Kindle ereader or any other device that allows you to download the Kindle app. If you read and enjoy my novel, please consider leaving a short review on Amazon as this really helps other readers decide if it's for them. Thank you.

~Cheryl

Paperback sale: THE RIVER and DIVINE INTERVENTION

SALE: While supplies last, I am selling the original (before covers) first editions of Divine Intervention and The River for only $15 each, including shipping and no GST for Canadians. This offer is for Canadian and US residents only, due to shipping costs.

Payments via PayPal only. Email me first to ensure I have stock left.

I'll be happy to autograph the books you order and personalize them too. These make great gifts!

As you may know, my bestselling novels The River and Divine Intervention have gone through a bit of a change in the past few months.

Divine Intervention was originally published in 2004, and while I liked the cover, I didn't LOVE it. It was the first book cover I had ever designed. Yes, me. lol And believe me, back then my design skills were limited. What I always wanted was a way to brand this series, something that carried over to the next book, and the next. I want readers to take one look at the cover and be intrigued. I also want them to recognize the cover as part of a series. So I came up with this cool concept in the new cover--but I did not design it. This time I left it to a professional. Jennifer Johnson is a fabulous graphic designer!

                                                       before                                 after

With The River, originally published in 2005, my decision to revamp the cover was a bit tougher. I was emotionally connected to the cover. Not because I designed it--I didn't. My daughter did. When she was only 14. I've always been so proud of that cover because of Jessica's involvement. As she grew older, she began telling me she wasn't that pleased with her cover. And that led me to rethink the idea of replacing it. When I mentioned this to Jessica, she was very happy--not what I expected. This time Jessica designed the background picture--of an underground river. And Jennifer put the cover together with the text. I think they made a great team on this one.

The River is re-released in trade paperback with stunning new cover

My 2005 techno-thriller THE RIVER was recently released in ebook edition with a stunning new cover. Today the new trade paperback edition became available for only $9.99 US at Createspace. Soon it will be available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble and other retailers.

The new second edition contains the same critically acclaimed story about a woman who takes a group of near strangers up north to the Nahanni River area of Canada's Northwest Territories, in search of her father who went missing years earlier and was presumed dead.

This new edition comes out prior to a highly anticipated ABC television series, also titled THE RIVER, which airs this fall. The storyline is very similar to my novel; in fact, I've already been asked by one fan if this series was based on my novel.

THE RIVER television series - A father goes missing in the Amazon and is presumed dead. His family and friends go looking for him. What they find is paranormal and beyond belief.

My bestselling thriller THE RIVER - Del and her followers hunt for her father along the Nahanni River and also encounter the paranormal...and a deadly plot that threatens all of mankind.

Check out my novel THE RIVER.

THE RIVER gets a new look

My bestselling techno-thriller, THE RIVER, will be released next month in a second edition trade paperback, priced to be more affordable than the older version. Nothing inside has changed much; it's the same action-packed story, same mystery, same chills and thrills. But as you'll see, the front cover now has a more ominous feel to it and there's a new publisher.

In 2005, the original cover was designed. The book retailed for $25.99 and was then reduced to $22.50. But to be honest, that price has bothered me and I've been trying to find a way to bring THE RIVER to everyone--with a lower price. And now I have!

In June 2011, the second edition trade paperback of THE RIVER will retail for only $9.99 on Amazon. Over the following month or two, the new edition will be distributed to other retailers.
Seven years ago, Del Hawthorne’s father and three of his friends disappeared near the Nahanni River and were presumed dead. When one of the missing men stumbles onto the University grounds, alive but barely recognizable and aging before her eyes, Del is shocked. Especially when the man tells her something inconceivable. Her father is still alive!
Check out the following covers:

What do you think? Do you like the new cover?

The River review: "Cheryl Kaye Tardif knows how to tell a great story."

"Cheryl Kaye Tardif puts her readers on the edge of their seat from the first page when her main character, Del Hawthorne, learns that her father, presumed dead for seven years, is alive...This story really has everything: mystery/suspense, cryptic messages, science fiction, great adventure, and wonderful character development. I had trouble putting this book down and had to cover the parts of the page I hadn't read yet to prevent myself from skipping ahead and spoiling the suspense...Cheryl Kaye Tardif knows how to tell a great story. She writes beautifully and her characters are real and believable...You will not be disappointed by the measure of suspense, mystery, adventure, and good storytelling that Cheryl dishes out."

Upcoming ebook and paperback releases by bestselling author Cheryl Kaye Tardif

Someone called me today and asked me where I've been lately. I haven't been out in public doing signings or appearances. I haven't spoken at a writers conference lately. And I haven't been blogging quite as much as usual. My answer: I've been crazy busy getting ebooks and trade paperbacks ready for publication. Whoo-ooo!

So here's what's in store over the next couple of months:

My bestselling psychic suspense, Divine Intervention, has undergone some exciting transformations. First, you'll notice a sizzling new cover, created by graphic designer extraordinaire, Jennifer Johnson from Sapphire Designs. Along with this new cover, which will brand the series, the description or back cover text has been adapted slightly...
Jasi and her team members―Psychometric Empath and profiler Ben Roberts and Victim Empath Natassia Prushenko―are joined by Brandon Walsh, the handsome but skeptical Chief of Arson Investigations. In a manhunt that takes them from Vancouver to Kelowna, Penticton and Victoria, they are led down a twisting path of sinister secrets.
Sifting through ashes and clues, Jasi realizes that there is more to the third victim than meets the eye. Perhaps not all of the victims were that innocent. The hunt intensifies when she learns that someone they know is next on the arsonist's list.
Unleashing her gift as a Pyro-Psychic, Jasi is compelled toward smoldering ashes and enters the killer's mind―a mind bent on destruction and revenge. And in the heat of early summer, Jasi discovers that a murderer lies in wait…much closer than she ever imagined.
The ebook edition of Divine Intervention, with bonus content, is already available at your favorite e-tailer (KindleKoboSmashwords etc.) A new (and less expensive!) trade paperback edition, also with bonus content, will be available at Amazon very soon (late Feb or early March).

In March, my collection of short stories, Skeletons in the Closet & Other Creepy Stories, will be released in trade paperback edition; it will feature bonus content. Also, my highly anticipated, brand new supernatural thriller, Children of the Fog, will be released in ebook edition, with bonus content. This will be followed by the trade paperback edition in April.

My contemporary romantic suspense, Lancelot's Lady, written under the pen name Cherish D'Angelo, will be released in trade paperback very soon as well. We're putting the finishing touches on it now. It could be available as early as late February, though it was originally slated to be released in April. I'll let you know as soon as it's out.

In May, readers will be able to read book 2 in the Divine series. Divine Justice will be released in ebook edition, followed by the trade paperback.

My bestselling techno-thriller, The River, is getting an overhaul. A stunning new cover is being designed and it will feature bonus content. The story itself remains the same. The new ebook and trade paperback are slated for May/June.

ALL my ebooks are under $4, and my trade paperbacks will soon ALL be under $12.

And now you know why I've been hibernating. All this plus all the nasty snow we've gotten this winter has made it easy for me to stay indoors and work on what I love. I am so excited to be bringing you new works, better covers and lots of bonus material. I hope you'll enjoy them all.

Amazon Reviewer Giveaway: Review one of my ebooks and receive Children of the Fog (ebook) FREE

SPECIAL OFFER FROM BESTSELLING AUTHOR CHERYL KAYE TARDIF

From now until March 15th, 2011, I'm holding a special
AMAZON REVIEWER GIVEAWAY.

Reviewers who qualify will receive a free ebook of my March 2011 supernatural thriller, Children of the Fog.

To qualify, please follow these 3 easy steps:

1. Write a review for any of my 6 titles (ebook or paperback) listed on Amazon.com (Whale Song, Lancelot's Lady, Skeletons in the Closet & Other Creepy Stories, Remote Control, Divine Intervention and The River). I am only interested in HONEST reviews, so if you believe one of my novels warrants one star, please write the review accordingly--and do tell me why. I always strive to make each work better than the last.

2. Post your review on Amazon.com between today and March 15th.

3. Send an email via my website to let me know you've reviewed one of my books and posted it to Amazon.com.

As long as your review shows up on Amazon.com and you've sent me the email by March 15th, I will send you Children of the Fog (ebook). Free ebooks will be awarded to ALL reviewers who qualify, and will be awarded by the end of March. Reviews posted before January 27th do not qualify.

Why am I holding this giveaway?
As an author, the more reviews my books have posted to Amazon or any other retailer that allows reviews,  the more readers will check out my books. I know that most readers read for enjoyment, not to write reviews. So if I'm going to ask for a favor, I am willing to reward you because I appreciate the time it takes to write even a short review. So in advance, my sincere gratitude for those who are inspired to post a review. Thank you.

*If you'd like to post this on your blog or website, please do. All I ask is that you keep it as is. TY! ~Cheryl
