Special Guest: Jesse Giles Christiansen offers a glimpse into the mysterious Doomsday Man

A special welcome to author Jesse Giles Christiansen, who is sharing (in his own unique way) his newest release, REVENGE OF THE SEA...

A Letter from Doomsday Man
November 24th, 2015
Address Unknown
Dear Land Misfits,

I should like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Cheryl Kaye Tardif, owner and acquisitions editor of Imajin Books, for allowing me the opportunity to share a few words with you today. I am writing this from a location I am strictly forbidden to disclose, both for the protection of your emotional well-being and out of the deepest respect for the entity whom I serve.

First and foremost, I encourage everyone not to be altogether unsettled by the book cover. Things are not always as they appear. For example, I took great pains to present myself in a reasonable and favorable manner, but my actions around the sea earned me a shady status among all of you, something of which I shall remain always regretful. Furthermore, it is of no fault of mine that I possess such a dynamic personality that the lightning seems incapable of being shooed away from me, especially on deliciously darker, rainy days.

Secondly, those of you reading these words should in no way whatsoever hold me directly responsible for any dark, negative, or otherwise untoward feelings you may experience as a result of reading my story. Both here and during the days laid out in the novel, Revenge of the Sea, I always made great efforts to be polite and agreeable toward you, despite the awful circumstances which all of you deservedly rained upon yourselves.

Finally, the release date of December 1st, 2015 was in no way intended to disturb anyone during the Holiday Season, and I shall kindly ask each and every one of you to duly note that villains are made, not born, and that you already had plenty of devils skipping jovially about Christmas long before I arrived.

In closing, I should like to make one humble request, which I think is perfectly reasonable under the circumstances. Please keep an open mind when reading my story, for when you judge others you also judge yourselves—and while you may think you stand outside the bars of the prison of your own convictions, you may realize all too soon that your cell is tragically less comfortable than ever imagined.

Yours truly,  Mr. DM

About Jesse:

#1 bestselling author in sea adventures, Jesse Giles Christiansen is an American author whose page-turning fiction weaves the real with the surreal, while also speaking to the human condition. He was hailed by New York Times bestselling author, William R. Forstchen, as "leaving readers so tantalized by the story lines, they think the events actually happened—a demonstration of skill surely to launch this author into the big leagues."

Jesse was born in Miami, FL, playing on beaches as a boy, the sky bronzing him forever and the sea turning his heart lyrical. After spending a summer in Alaska before graduating from Florida State University with a degree in literature and philosophy, he wrote his first novel, Journey into the Mystic.

He feels he is haunted by Hemingway's ghost, not just by the poster in his writing studio that stares at him, saying, "What else you got?" but also by having a café called Hemingway's in the small European city where he writes. Finally, Hemingway became his neighbor on Amazon when his novel, Pelican Bay, outsold Old Man and the Sea.

He currently lives in Lüneburg, Germany, with his wife and their precocious White Siamese cat.

Guest post: An Excerpt from GOTH TOWN by Jesse Giles Christiansen

GOTH TOWN by Jesse Giles Christiansen

PROLOGUE

JAKE RAYNER is the only one, other than Samantha Bryant, who had the vision.

He’ll never forget the first time it happened. He was out for a walk in the woods by himself, a practice highly discouraged by the Overseers.

He was always surprised at how little everyone questioned the rules of the Overseers. Many of them seemed so ridiculous. Then again, they owed everything to them. There would have been no life here at all, if not for them.

That afternoon the hazy air was happy and it seemed to seep into everything. Jake was reckless to allow it to seep into him. His feet, his legs, his fingers, even his thoughts, were reckless.

I know they’re going to find me. I just know it. Then they’re going to hook me up to the Recalibration Machine again.

But that day he didn’t care about a single thing. He was mad with life. Life was mad in his veins. Life was livid in his veins.

Everything spoke to him. The birds’ songs were like shrilly operas stuck in fortissimo. The creek sneaking along by his side crackled and popped the way a long-asleep radio wakes up hungry and eager to play. The wind in the pines moaned softly like a lonely lover.

Then it happened.

He felt dizzy at first, his head so light he thought it might float away. Something surged inside him that could have been swallowed lightning, rising, writhing, and climbing up to his head.

The memory came.

Memories were demons; they were even more forbidden than being all alone; they were not allowed to even start. When they went in for their weekly screening, any evidence of memories prior to the Anti-Emotion Movement was immediately erased. It was for their own good. Really. They had to believe in the Overseers. They gave them everything, and asked for so little in return. The Overseers picked them up after the Great Fog.

He just stood there and could not stop the memory. Oh, it was so warm. That swallowed lightning curled up, balled up in his head and took to nuclear fusion, forming a miniature sun to melt all the work of the entire Overseers’ brilliant technology.

But what an afternoon it was.

The first flash was of shiny boxes wrapped in fancy bows under a tree that someone had stuck in a living room. What a bizarre image. Why would someone put a perfectly good tree in a living room? Perfect madness. Perfect madness, indeed. And the poor, poor tree.

The tree was wrapped with winking lights, and as he stood there, letting this memory take root, he could see the pines around him dressed the same. They were beautiful, and he overflowed with the urge to take all the pines in the forest, shrink them down, and put them into everyone’s homes.

Ridiculous. Utterly ridiculous.

He heard footsteps, and the beautiful, horrible, absurd memory vanished. The memory vanished like the scent of a woman riding with you on a train—a woman you know you will never see again.

He waited for the Goth Town Police to arrest him. And he cherished those seconds as the taste of a curious and wild memory remained for a few seconds on his lips. Those few seconds were more blissful than the rambunctious air that crept all through the forest that afternoon and shot rays of perilous hope into everything. In those few seconds, he tried to chase the echo that was home to that taste. That scent of a woman on a train. He tried to return to it with the desperation of a legless man waking from a Boston Marathon dream.

But at least the taste was there when they handcuffed him.

At least the flicker.

A gray haunt … at least …

Guest Author Jesse Giles Christiansen and his GOTH TOWN Character Interview

Today's special guest post is from American author Jesse Giles Christiansen, and he has a great blog tour lined up for his newest release, GOTH TOWN. Welcome, Jesse! :-)

Character Interview: Inside the Mind of GOTH TOWN’s Founder, Lord Gothly

JGC: Why Christmaslessness around the whole world? Isn’t Goth Town enough?

LG: Ha-ha. Your thinking is so limited. What a lousy physicist you would have made! My grandfather’s vision was to not just stop pesky, debilitating emotions in one small place, but everywhere. You see, Goth Town was only the testing ground, so to speak. The world is suffering from omnipresent locusts. Oh, you cannot see them, dear fellow, but they are just as devouring. Tell me, would you stop global locusts in only one place?

If you were to stop all emotions, wouldn’t you stop all thinking, too? Memories?

Ha! Not so dull-witted as I expected! Of course, you boldly assume that thoughts and feelings are hopelessly tied together. How erroneous you are, dear fellow! Yes, thoughts breed emotions, but there are pure thoughts that have no emotions. No sappy, disabling memories … just those of truth and unequivocal existence. What bliss they are! They flow like the quiet symphony that accompanies the swift movements of logic. They walk like barefoot women through Times Square! Only 33 days left!

How do you plan to accomplish such a feat?

Again, such limited thinking! I would not expect someone like you to understand dark physics, especially one who thinks in such two-dimensional terms. Accomplish. Ha-ha!

How could the world exist without fond memories?

We define fond quite differently, let me assure you. Take this hideous, pitiable thing called Christmas, for example. Is it fond? Really? The primary components of Christmas are love and giving. Yuck! It turns my stomach to event think of such things! Do love and giving make the world a better place? Do they save the environment? Allow for interstellar travel? Do they keep one warm at night? No! I shall tell you what they do. They make the world stronger rather than weaker. One day the world will see that they have had it all quite reversed. They will thank me! To love someone is to erase his or her purpose and individuality. To give to them keeps them from fending for themselves. Do you not see? Christmas is really not good for the world. My grandfather believed it was the root of the failure of humanity.

GOTH TOWN has already sold over 100 copies, and it’s not even Thanksgiving yet. How do you feel about that?

I am so tired of hearing about this book. I am positively sick with it! You see, this is the pathetic sentimentality that I am trying to save everyone from. Do you not see how pitifully absurd the notion is? As if a book is going to stop anything. A hundred you said? Ha! How many stars are there? How much dark energy can we siphon from a black hole? Take your books and burn them; perhaps they might warm a small group of Christmas urchins!

You seem very emotional. Isn’t that a contradiction?

You seem to have an extremely impoverished sense of time. You promised fifteen minutes. I have work to do. The Global Re-Constitution Device must be ready on Christmas morning. I bid thee adieu!

ATTENTION: Solve a Book Crime Being Committed

Tonight, help me welcome talented author, Jesse Giles Christiansen, whose new release, CAPTAIN SHELBY, is releasing later this fall. In the meantime, Jesse invites you to become a video and book star. Jesse, thank you for being a guest here on The Suspense is Killing Me. Take it away...

As you read this, thousands of readers are missing out on the opportunity to have their profile pictures appear both in a rock video and inside a published book. I know, it is a heinous crime indeed!

What is the crime?

The crime is regret. The Facebook event involved in this crime, open to the public, June 10th, may be one of the most unique events held in recent years. It’s far more than just huge prizes and fun activities, it comes with the chance to one day in the future, bring your fellow bibliophiles over to your grinning bookshelf and say, “I have a very unique collector’s item; I have a book by a rising author with my picture in the back. Check it out!”

How do I solve the crime?

Like all good detectives, it is paramount that you investigate the event thoroughly to see if there is any evidence leading to the crime. Every detective that joins the event, upon investigation, will reduce the occurrence of the crime by 2%. Once the event reaches 500 guests (currently at 306), the crime will be well on its way to being solved; 500 avid readers will have their pictures in the back of the prequel to the number one list bestseller, PELICAN BAY, entitled CAPTAIN SHELBY, coming out soon.

How do I report the crime?

Once you join the event, you’ll notice that one of the big prizes is signed paperbacks for life from the author hosting the event. The person who invites the most friends will receive this prize. By inviting your book nerd friends, you are reporting the crime and thereby preventing it from being spread in the future. You can make a difference!

Who is the author?

Jesse Giles Christiansen is an American writer from Miami, Fl. who grew up playing in and around the ocean, now constantly enamored with the sea. He’s the author of PELICAN BAY published by Imajin Books, Amazon #1 bestseller in sea adventures, outselling OLD MAN AND THE SEA by Hemingway.

Can I Make a Civil Arrest?

Yes! You can make a civil arrest by telling anyone who refuses to go about the regret they may face in the future. You may also tell them about the importance of supporting rising authors in their literary community to help reduce this crime all around the world.

What if I’m Not Available on June 10th?

This is a Facebook online event. All that is required is that you log into the Internet from anywhere in the world and stop by for a few minutes. And if you can’t do that, just be sure to fulfill the basic requirement for being in the video and book sometime during the day of June 10th. Simply buy or gift PELICAN BAY for only .99 cents and post via Amazon that you did (on Facebook or Twitter). Very low price for immortality, don’t you agree? These days, sodas often cost more than that!

Sign me up!

Thank you! See you there!

Special guest author Jesse Giles Christiansen talks about why authors should sometimes embrace insanity

Sometimes when you lose, you win.

This weekend is the big kickoff for a promo that I don't think I'll ever forget, and one that I've done everything in my power to ensure that I always remember. September 27-29 are my free days for my first foray with Amazon's KDP Select program through my publisher, Imajin Books. Imajin Book's owner and bestselling author, Cheryl Kaye Tardif, has used this program to become a bestseller, as well as other authors, including her own.

A part of me is afraid. A part of me is thrilled. The whole of me is a human live wire.

My novel, PELICAN BAY, was a list bestseller out of the gate. Being in a genre top 100 is like going to your local theme park. It's terrific, and you definitely want to go back ... but it isn’t Disney World folks.

I want to go to Disney World.

Really badly.

And stay.

Maybe I'm already there, hiding in the Haunted House and sleeping there with the familiar ghosts.

Am I a ghost? Right now I feel like a familiar ghost. And there's nothing wrong with that. No. Not at all. I'm a new author who has tasted some success like drops of deliciously acidic rain on my tongue.

To go from ghost to bodily form, I must make the top paid 100 on Amazon ... where the magic happens. But as most of you already know, this is much easier said than done. I have the help now of my marketing savvy, mentoring publisher, great authors, passionate readers, keen reviewers, artists, editors, and friends and family. However, as I write this, my promo group, which I'm calling Captain Shelby's Skeleton Army (Captain Shelby is the big character from PELICAN BAY), consists of only 38 people. But you know what? I'd rather have 38 faithful, like-minded, artistic souls than a 1000 bandwagon-jumpers or doubters. Yes, I'll take my little army and we'll see what we can do.

My free days end Sunday, and then PELICAN BAY has to swim. I mean REALLY swim. I think it can. I really do. I believe it, but I need your faith, too. Your help. No one is an island, after all, in any realm.

What started all this madness, really, were two things. First, I've been watching PELICAN BAY and it has done some things I never dreamed a new book from a new author would. There are those days. Yeah, those days. When I'm not doing any promos, sending out just basic tweets or Facebook posts, and suddenly the book's ranking, which I fear on those days will sink into oblivion, makes these jumps like a great tarpon finding its third and fourth winds. It truly amazes me. Also, PELICAN BAY was a list bestseller for over two months.

The other reason, truth be told, is that I was supposed to do this promo later in the year with a power author. Certain circumstances led to her having to cancel our promo. I was disappointed, not at her, but at life. Don't laugh here, but I started to feel like Rudy in that cheesy but inspiring film, after his friend dies in the factory fire. This voice inside me just said, "You have to do this now, on your own ... don't wait."

And so the insanity began.

Why is my promo insane? Why is reaching for the top paid 100 on Amazon nuts? Well, I'm not a math genius, but you don't have to be to understand the statistics of a new author reaching for such a goal. There are over 3 million eBooks on Amazon. The closer you get to the top paid 100, the more your book, no matter how strong, turns into a colorful snail. It slithers inches along the pavement as if begging to be squashed by Amazon's mighty foot.

But it's good for an author to embrace insanity, chiefly because even the most basic, consistent things that we come to rely on in life ... are incomprehensible. Take these words, for instance. Perhaps you are reading this blog post, and I thank you warmly for that. But these words. What are they? They appear so consistently to you now, but do you "know" them? You may be reading a computer screen in a complicated dream. You may forget that these very words are not objects, but only consistent flickers of your senses. Were any of countless possible events to occur inside or outside of you, these words would simply vanish.

So insanity for the artist may boil down to, really, reaching for things that defy our reliable senses, our common knowledge. If you want to do something unusual, you have to think unusually. Reach senselessly. Or as Cheryl Kaye Tardif says, "Think BIG." And yes, she's part of the Captain Shelby Skeleton Army. And I'm deeply thankful for that.

But what if I fail? Well ... sometimes win you lose, you win.

Yours in literature,

J.G.C.
