Biography of romantic suspense author Cherish D'Angelo
Cherish's debut romance, Lancelot's Lady placed in the semi-finals of Dorchester Publishing's "Next Best Celler" contest and went on to win an Editor's Choice Award from Textnovel. Currently living in Edmonton, Alberta, she enjoys long walks on the beach, except there aren't any around so she has to make do with trips around the hot tub or a vacation to a tropical paradise. And margaritas.

The business side of being a writer

Some people might not view an author as a business person, but I have to tell you, there's far more to being a writer than cloistering oneself in a small room for months and typing out 80,000 words. In today's world, a successful writer must also take on the hats of publicist, marketer, event planner, advertising rep, accountant, stocker (not stalker) and more.
As a successful Edmonton author, I am right at home with the writing and marketing part. I even make a decent publicist and have done this for other writers. It's the accounting part I suck at. And the stocking of shelves.
I'd love to discuss this here with other writers. How do you manage the number side of writing? Do you hire someone else or just suck it up and do it? Are there other options you've discovered (other than having books published by a traditional publisher, which I've also had)?
For me writing is both an immense pleasure and a business. I can't really have one without the other--unless I want to be my only reader. With the economy being as it is and so many changes in the book industry, authors must take on more of the marketing role, no matter who publishes you.
Finally, a small bit of promo from the marketing side: I am one of only a handful of Canadians who are competing in a writing competition sponsored by Dorchester Publishing, a very respectable US publisher. I think I'm the only Edmonton contestant as well. I'd sincerely appreciate your support.
Please check out my debut romantic suspense Lancelot's Lady on Textnovel.com and click on the blue thumb and blue phone circles. This gives me 2 points in the contest. There are 3 days to go until the semi-finalists are selected. I really want to win this! The prize is a publishing contract with Dorchester.

Sign up is fast and free and you'll have access to many novels and short stories you can read for free. Thank you, in advance, for your support of an Edmonton author.
Now I must go and procrastinate about doing my accounting. :-)

Hope Mission's 80th Anniversary Banquet
The Premiere of Alberta Ed Stelmach and his wife Marie attended this evening's event. The Premiere spoke passionately about his 10-year plan to end homelessness in Alberta. Combining a 10-year plan with the community services provided by nonprofit organizations like Hope Mission adds strength and hope for a solution, and currently this plan is the only 10-year plan Canada has in motion.
Although there have been some rumblings about Alberta's deficit and some uncertainty about the 10-year plan being initiated, the Premiere's passionate speech and that of the Minister of Housing & Urban Affairs Yvonne Fritz suggests that this plan is going through. There are plans for affordable housing for the homeless, plus programs to help them succeed in staying off the streets. The latter is a key element.
The stories shared by recovery graduates at the banquet were especially touching, reminding everyone of why Hope Mission exists. Tanya shared her story of abuse and addictions, and how the people at Hope Mission helped her turn her life around. We heard stories from some of the men who were being honored for hitting milestones in the recovery program. Every one of them shared how alone they felt, how lost they were--until they walked through Hope Mission's doors and into the welcoming atmosphere that is provided by everyone there.
My brother Jason was in my thoughts and heart tonight. He used some of Hope Mission's services, and after Jasons's murder in 2006 I felt drawn to become involved with the Mission. Tonight as I watched a group of 20+ men cross the stage to receive their recovery certificate, I wished that Jason had made it this far, but he was never given the chance. Someone took it from him. It's too late for Jason, but it's not too late for every homeless person living on our streets today.
About 800 people attended the banquet. 800 people from all walks of life. 800 people who were raised in very different families. 800 people who were educated in different cities and towns. 800 people who are connected to the Mission in many different ways. 800 people who came together to celebrate that Hope is alive in Edmonton and that we care.
Even though times are tough, even though jobs are unstable, there is Hope. I invite you to find a way to celebrate Earth Day by making it "Hope Month". Celebrate Hope in humanity by helping those in your communities who are less fortunate than you--because there is ALWAYS someone less fortunate. For the rest of April, please consider donating clothing, household items, personal care items, food, funds or your time as a volunteer to a mission like Hope Mission.
One final note: If you can find a copy of Whale Song in any bookstore or online (it's out of print, but some stores or online retailers may still have it), please know that when you buy this novel, a percentage of my royalties goes to Hope Mission. I will be doubling that amount for the remaining royalties from this edition. I will be pledging a new amount when I have secured the movie deal and 3rd print edition, which are in the works for Whale Song.

EDMONTON, AB, October 10, 2008 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Apple's new iPhone 3G hasn't been available in Canada for very long and already one Canadian has discovered a unique use for it. Critically acclaimed author Cheryl Kaye Tardif plans to use the Notes application to write a novel titled 'Finding Bliss'.
"I am often 'blasted' with an idea for a novel at the least convenient times," Tardif says. "Two nights ago a novel idea about a teenage girl named Bliss hit me. I had to capture her story right away, so I immediately reached for my iPhone."

Cookin' in the kitchen on "Celebrity Chefs"
The recipe was a favorite of my brother Jason and he used to beg my mom to make it. There were never any leftovers of this dessert to store in the fridge--Jason made sure of that! :) So in honor of my brother who died in 2006, I decided to make this simple and easy recipe.
"Celebrity Chefs" was a blast to film. You'll be able to see the video on CityTV's website next week. You'll see the wacky side of me that most people don't see at my book signings. (Really! I am much more professional, Mr. Publisher!) lol
As I was cookin' in my kitchen, we talked about Whale Song, movie possibilities, the death of my brother Jason and the 3 nonprofits I donate to in his honor, plus the Christmas wish list that I discovered online and my involvement with Alliance for Children's Enrichment in finding sponsors. Of course, by the time CityTV's done editing it, who knows what you'll see.
At the end of filming, Jessica and I sampled the Strawberry Dumplings and...sigh...they were just like I remembered. A wonderful, warm comfort food for a cold winter day. I'll post the recipe on Tuesday, Dec. 11th. When the cameras stopped rolling we invited Rhonda the producer and Steve the camera guy to have some. Nice job they have! Although, I don't think they sampled too much of what actor/comedian Tom Green made during his "Celebrity Chefs" episode.
"Celebrity Chefs" airs every Tuesday at 6:30 pm on "Your City" and my episode will be on this Tuesday, Dec. 11th. If you miss it, you'll be able to watch it on CityTV's site at:
http://www.citytv.com/edmonton/yourcity_34640.aspx
So to my mom who found me the recipe, thank you! The Strawberry Dumplings were a complete success.
And we didn't have to use the fire extinguisher! :)
