"You can't slay the beast if you don't know what it is."

This is what I say when someone asks me about pursuing a diagnosis of any kind.

It's not easy to be completely vulnerable and admit to the world that your body is defective, that it is being destroyed from the inside out, and that there is NO cure.

Even worse is discovering that most professionals in the health industry have no idea what hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome is or how to treat it.

My journey to find out what was wrong started over 15 years ago, though I had symptoms even as a child. My ankles were weak and rolled easily. I was highly flexible, but the muscles were often not strong enough to bring me back to a stable position. I could do the splits. I could sit on the floor, legs in a V, forehead or the side of my face touching the floor. My thumbs curved backwards; back then they considered it double-jointed. Back pain, sensitivity to bumps in mattress, super sensitive skin. My skin is so sensitive I can feel the tiniest crumb in my bed. I used to laugh and say I had "Princess and the Pea" Syndrome.

In my thirties, I experienced a lot of lower back pain. I was advised to go to a chiropractor. And I did. BIG mistake! The chiropractor did manipulations I later discovered were dangerous for someone with hEDS. He didn't know. And I did what I was told. I was on the chiropractor merry-go-round for over a year--and I was in constant pain. Some days I could barely walk. When I stopped going to the chiropractor, I got better. Not cured, but far less pain. I'll never go back!

Some people have a mild form of Hypermobile Spectrum Disorder, often with little pain and no dislocations. At the far end of that scale is hEDS, and that affects every part of your body. My collagen is defective. I liken it to knitting a blanket and dropping stitches along the way. My skin is stretchy, I scar easily, I bruise easily, and my joints can dislocate any time.

As you can imagine, when dealing with something like this and all the testing that's needed, it affects every part of your life. hEDS has reduced my mobility. I can walk but not long distances. I need to sit with my legs raised as much as possible during the day. I also have dysautonomia, common with hEDS, and that can be scary. I've now had a number of fainting episodes. The first time it happened, I ended up in the hospital. Dysautonomia also makes my body temperature control go all wonky; it looks like a hot flash but worse because it doesn't turn off for hours sometimes.

The good news? EDSes of all kinds (13) are now being researched around the globe, and the most helpful website for information is the Ehlers-Danlos Society. A couple of years ago there were several breakthroughs in EDS research, and new criteria and diagnostics emerged. Out of the 13 types, only one is not easily identified by a marker--and of course, that's the one I have.

hEDS isn't easy to diagnose if you don't know what to look for. Thankfully, there's a diagnostic checklist that can help. If you suspect you or someone you know has hEDS, please bring this form to your doctor. If you meet the criteria, you'll have your beast.

As you can imagine, hEDS has affected my life in ways I wasn't expecting. I'm 56, a bestselling writer with numerous plots sitting on my computer. I experience brain fog and extreme fatigue during the day. I cannot write in a fog...so my work has suffered.

But here's the thing...

Writing fulfills my soul like nothing else, so I will continue to write when I can. I still have dreams I want to pursue, goals to fulfill and a television crime series script to finish. And I will pursue them, because I have always said: "Dare to Dream...and Dream BIG!" That has been my motto since my first book was published.

So if I need thumb splints, wrist splints, ankle splints, knee splints etc., and mobility aids like a cane and a scooter, then I will use them because that improves quality of life. And QUALITY of life is what it's about, not quantity.

There is still a lot I need to learn about my beast, hEDS, but I'm getting there.

So if you were wondering where I've been or what I'm doing, now you know. The main reason why I decided to blog about something so deeply personal is to educate others about EDS. The more we know, the more people will be helped.

Live a good life, be kind to those less fortunate, love those you love.
Dear Land Misfits,

I should like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Cheryl Kaye Tardif, owner and acquisitions editor of Imajin Books, for allowing me the opportunity to share a few words with you today. I am writing this from a location I am strictly forbidden to disclose, both for the protection of your emotional well-being and out of the deepest respect for the entity whom I serve.

First and foremost, I encourage everyone not to be altogether unsettled by the book cover. Things are not always as they appear. For example, I took great pains to present myself in a reasonable and favorable manner, but my actions around the sea earned me a shady status among all of you, something of which I shall remain always regretful. Furthermore, it is of no fault of mine that I possess such a dynamic personality that the lightning seems incapable of being shooed away from me, especially on deliciously darker, rainy days.

Secondly, those of you reading these words should in no way whatsoever hold me directly responsible for any dark, negative, or otherwise untoward feelings you may experience as a result of reading my story. Both here and during the days laid out in the novel, Revenge of the Sea, I always made great efforts to be polite and agreeable toward you, despite the awful circumstances which all of you deservedly rained upon yourselves.

Finally, the release date of December 1st, 2015 was in no way intended to disturb anyone during the Holiday Season, and I shall kindly ask each and every one of you to duly note that villains are made, not born, and that you already had plenty of devils skipping jovially about Christmas long before I arrived.

In closing, I should like to make one humble request, which I think is perfectly reasonable under the circumstances. Please keep an open mind when reading my story, for when you judge others you also judge yourselves—and while you may think you stand outside the bars of the prison of your own convictions, you may realize all too soon that your cell is tragically less comfortable than ever imagined.

Yours truly,
Mr. DM

About Jesse:

#1 bestselling author in sea adventures, Jesse Giles Christiansen is an American author whose page-turning fiction weaves the real with the surreal, while also speaking to the human condition. He was hailed by New York Times bestselling author, William R. Forstchen, as "leaving readers so tantalized by the story lines, they think the events actually happened—a demonstration of skill surely to launch this author into the big leagues."

Jesse was born in Miami, FL, playing on beaches as a boy, the sky bronzing him forever and the sea turning his heart lyrical. After spending a summer in Alaska before graduating from Florida State University with a degree in literature and philosophy, he wrote his first novel, Journey into the Mystic.

He feels he is haunted by Hemingway's ghost, not just by the poster in his writing studio that stares at him, saying, "What else you got?" but also by having a café called Hemingway's in the small European city where he writes. Finally, Hemingway became his neighbor on Amazon when his novel, Pelican Bay, outsold Old Man and the Sea.

He currently lives in Lüneburg, Germany, with his wife and their precocious White Siamese cat.
As a Canadian author using Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP), my journey has been less than hassle free, so I'm posting today to help other non-US authors get through the headache of withholding taxes and IRS forms.

If you're a non-US author and you've noticed your royalty checks don't match your numbers online, it's most likely because a withholding tax has been implemented--30% on average. But there's a solution.

First, a non-US resident and DTP publisher/author does NOT need a US address or a US bank account. Amazon will mail you a check or via direct deposit.

However, Amazon will withhold approx. 30% of all earnings of non-US residents UNLESS authors have an ITIN or EIN, which you must get from the IRS.

FYI, this is how I did it a few years ago when everyone said I needed an ITIN. But I should warn you--it's much easier now, and I'll tell you exactly what you need to do after I share my experience.

Don't apply for an ITIN!!!

1. I contacted an "Acceptance Agent" in my city. There's a list of Canadian Acceptance Agents (and US and International Acceptance Agents) on the IRS website.
2. I had Smashwords send me a letter stating I was selling my books through them. You need one letter only from one distributor, and when I asked Amazon they were completely uncooperative and refused to send me the letter.
3. I filled out the W-7 form at the Agent's office, he photocopied my passport and he sent these out along with the letter from Smashwords (who are aweseome about giving letters).
4. It took about 7 weeks before I got my letter from the IRS with my ITIN.
5. Then I filled out the W-8BEN form and sent one to each US distributor (Amazon, Smashwords etc). From that point on, I've received 100% of my royalties due; no tax was withheld.

Smashwords has great instructions on all this on their site. I don't know why Amazon hasn't done the same. Smashwords also has links to all the forms and the address for sending the W-8BEN. Again, Amazon could take some pointers on customer service.

As per Smashwords, here are the important links you need:

Is this a hassle? Most definitely. That's why I no longer recommend this way. Get an EIN!!!

Is it worth it to get an EIN? Yes. Why should 1/3 of my earnings be held back? I'm Canadian, I pay my taxes here.

Does anyone know the correct mailing address for sending in the W-8BEN form to Amazon?

"We need to receive a physical copy (paper form) of the W8 that contains a US tax id and that is signed in blue ink. Please put the supplier code/vendor code, vendor code: DUVNS in the upper right hand corner and then mail it to the below address. As soon as we receive it, we will update the account and reimburse withholding that has been deducted this year. Note: withholding can only be paid back in the current year it was deducted.

Amazon Digital Services
Attn: Vendor Maintenance
PO Box 80683
Seattle, WA 98108-0683

If you have further questions, please write back to us at dtp-support@amazon.com."

Please note that you may want to check to ensure that the "supplier code" is the same for everyone. I have no idea if it is or if it's linked to my account only. If you know the answer, please email me at cherylktardif (at) shaw.ca.

UPDATE 3: Sept 29, 2015 - Forget the ITIN. Get an EIN instead. It's much easier and FREE!

UPDATE 2: One writer reported to me that the supplier code was different than mine, so your best bet is to email DTP support and ask them.

UPDATE: May 18, 2011 -
- Createspace will send you the letter you need to get the ITIn rolling, if you sell your books via them.
- Smashwords has a Google Chrome bug that is preventing emails to go through to them via the customer support link at the top of Smashwords.com. If you've emailed them about this or any other matter and haven't heard back from them in 3-5 days, your email may never have reached them. They're working on this issue. In the meantime, try IE or another browser.
- From Mark Coker at Smashwords: "At Smashwords, authors request the letters through their payee profile at https://www.smashwords.com/account/payee. They can request the letter once their account balance reaches $10.00."
Today I'm featuring a special guest--author Andy Peloquin. Andy is participating in a blog tour to promote his newest release, BLADE OF THE DESTROYER, book 1 in The Last Bucelarii series.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I think the writing bug hit me around the age of 15. I had a lot of free time at that age, and no real friends to speak of. I gravitated more to solo activities. I was always pretty handy with the computer. When I saw that many of my online "friends" were writing, I thought I'd give it a try. I found it wasn't bad at it--even won an online competition with a short piece of prose.

I wrote off and on until the age of 20, when life conspired to fill my time with a host of other activities. I didn't start writing fiction again until the age of 25, but once I picked up that creative pen, I was totally hooked. Hardly a day has gone by since that I haven't written something!

What is your work schedule like when you're writing?

Well, it really depends on the day of the week. :D

Monday through Thursday, I can usually only fit in about two hours of writing--one in the morning, and one in the afternoon.

Friday, I can fit a couple of hours in the morning, and I've reserved Friday afternoon as sacred writing time. I usually get between 2 and 3 hours Friday PM before my family wants to go out.

Saturday morning is also reserved for writing. My wife works from 6 to 10 AM, so I'll usually take advantage of that time to sit down and get some writing in--even if it means getting up at 6 AM on a Saturday!

How long on average does it take you to write a book?

That's an interesting question…

It really depends on how much time I can dedicate to it. I will usually take about 6 weeks per draft, with a break of 6 weeks between each draft. So right now, I'm 75% of the way done with Book 2, working through Book 3, and writing a second unrelated series. I've got it down to a fine art. Usually from the moment I start writing the first word of the rough draft until it's ready for submission to the editor/publisher will be about six months.

If this book is part of a series, tell us a little about it?

This book is part of a series, and one that I'm very excited to write.

The first book starts out in the city of Voramis, and lots of fascinating, intriguing, and heart-wrenching things happen. The Hunter finds out more about the past he has forgotten, discovers the truth of his demonic heritage, and realizes that he's more than just a remorseless killing machine.

Over the next 4 or 5 books (still not sure how many it will end up being), he continues to evolve as a person while finding more about his past, his "destiny" (which he is totally averse to fulfilling), and the truth of demons on the world of Einan.

There's plenty of story to keep you interested, but I'm trying to make it a character-driven piece. It's all about the Hunter and his personal journey.

The main character in your book is covered in scars--one for each person he has killed using his accursed dagger. Do you have any scars? What are they from?

I don't have quite as many scars as the Hunter does, but I have my fair share!

My hands are covered in scars from various car accidents, stupid childish things (playing with knives), work scars, etc.

My right elbow had a shard of glass embedded in it for about two months, so the scar is still visible.

I put my right knee through a pane of glass.

Those are probably the most visible scars.

What are your thoughts on writing a book series?

I LOVE series--probably more than standalone books. I feel like a series is the best way to really get to know and fall in love with a character. I have read many excellent standalone novels, but for me and my writing abilities, I like what a series enables me to do with the character and his journey.

Do you proofread/edit all your own books or do you get someone to do that for you?

I proofread and edit my own work multiple times, but I also have a professional editor to do it as well. Thanks to my publisher--J Ellington Ashton Press--I get at least two wonderful editors to slice and dice the book and polish the writing.

Do you think that the cover plays an important part in the buying process?

ABSOLUTELY! In fact, the cover is almost more important than the book itself, especially in the world of online marketing/sales. A good cover can sell a book that may be a bit iffy. Of course, I'm not relying on my AMAZING cover to sell the book. I'm definitely making sure that it's as good as I can make it--on par with the works published by the bigger houses and more famous authors.

How are you publishing this book and why (e.g. Indie, traditional or both)?

I indie published my first book, but with this book (and the series), I wanted to go with a publishing house. I wanted multiple eyes to help me polish the final product, because I know that it has the potential to be something truly great.

What are your thoughts on good/bad reviews?

I LOVE both! Good reviews always make me feel warm and fuzzy inside, but bad reviews help me to improve my writing. I got a few bad reviews on my first novel, and I used them to improve my writing style, plot, and overall writing ability for this book. It's thanks to those bad reviews that this new novel is as good as it is!

Do you read your reviews? Do you respond to them, good or bad? Do you have any advice on how to deal with the bad?

I absolutely read the reviews. There will always be the occasional "troll" who leaves a crappy review just for the heck of it. But for the most part, the reviews offer at least a glimpse into what made the book less than appealing to that person. If I can make the next book better, I will turn that person into a reader/fan.

Do you think that giving books away free works and why?

I love giving away books! I'm actually giving away my first novel--In the Days: A Tale of the Forgotten Continent--on my website (http://andypeloquin.com/books) right now. I feel like my book is something that people will enjoy, so I want to get it into as many people's hands as possible. It may not earn me a ton of money, but it's a way to build my platform as an author and get more fans.

How do you relax?

I'm a total comic book nerd! I love to read just about anything Marvel puts out, and I keep up with all of the latest digital comics. I'm a TV buff, but I like to hit the gym, cook for my family, lounge around with a good book, or relax on the beach. I've got relaxing down to a pretty fine art.

Here's an oddball for you: If you were an animal in a zoo, what would you be?

Ask anyone who knows me, and they'd probably say "a
bear"--and I'd agree. I'm a large, hairy, friendly guy, with a pretty mild
temperament but hella fierce when I get pissed off. Definitely a bear!

Thank you, Andy, for sharing a piece of yourself here on The Suspense is Killing Me.
As a bestselling suspense author who has been indie published since 2003, I've learned that being flexible and open to learning and adapting to change is key to being successful in this industry, and success for a professional career author should be defined by sales and income, though there are other indicators of success.

Too many authors schedule discount sales, post a couple of Facebook posts and send out a few tweets and then complain about lack of sales. Some do many small promotions, paying for 1-2 inexpensive advertising spots each time, and again don’t see high sales. Promos like these might get your book on a Top 100 genre bestseller list on Amazon, but they’re not enough to produce high sales.

You need to understand that watering down the impact of a discount sale by doing them too often just isn’t the way to go. You’re better off saving your advertising budget for a MAJOR promotion, and by “MAJOR” I mean spending $600-1200, and running 1-2 major promos a year per title. This is an investment in your career, in your work and in you.

Today, I’ll share some stats on my last major BookBub promotion, detailing my recent experience with a BookBub promo, so that you can see what advertising on book sites can do for sales.

Organizing and setting up my promotion:

First, I selected a book that has sold well but had never been on BookBub before or priced at $0.99 for many months. I chose SUBMERGED, a standalone thriller with tie-ins to my #1 bestseller, CHILDREN OF THE FOG. When I run a promotion for one title, there is always a strong possibility that some of my other titles will see an increase in sales too.

I decided to run a Countdown/BookBub combination promo, since Countdown deals get extra exposure from Amazon, and they create a bit more excitement. I determined I would only run this promo if BookBub accepted SUBMERGED (they'd turned it down numerous times in the past), so the first thing I did was pitch my book to BookBub, letting them know that my dates were very flexible. I requested a date close to the end of the month—payday. I did not book any other ads until after I had a BookBub date.

Once my BookBub ad was secured, I used that date as Day 1 of my Countdown promo and set up both US and UK Amazons. (Since we only get one Countdown promo every 90 days, you may as well do both Amazons.) I used all 7 days because it can take a few days to get into the overall Top 100 on Amazon, and I wanted to stay there as long as possible, building momentum.

My promo for SUBMERGED was set for the last few days of October and first few days of November, from October 28 - November 3rd (evening). This worked out great because most people are paid at the end of the month. I’ve found better success when I run a promo during a payday—15th and 30th.

I priced SUBMERGED at $0.99. I selected this price as this title had only been on sale for $0.99 once before, and that was when the SUBMERGED was first published, 8 months earlier.

Then I purchased other advertising, including Kindle Nation Daily, Fussy Librarian, BookSends, Story Finds, Bargain Booksy, Digital Book Today, Ereader News Today, The Kindle Book Review and more.

5 ads ran on Day 1 (Tuesday)

4 ads ran on Day 2 (Wednesday)

2 ads ran on Day 3 (Thursday)

4 ads ran on Day 4 (Friday)

3 ads ran on Day 5 (Saturday)

2 ads ran on Day 6 (Sunday)

2 ads ran on Day 7 (Monday)

Four of the above ads were free for various reasons; 18 ads were paid. I paid a total of $1214 for 22 ads.

I also set up various tweets to go out every couple of hours at random times each day of the promotion. During the promotion, I posted various updates to my Facebook pages, creating excitement and getting my readers and fans involved in where I was in my promotion. I used screen captures to show them when I made the lists. I had screen captures that showed where my book stood in relation to other Big-Name authors.

It’s important to note that prior to this promo and during the first 27 days of October, I had only sold 26 copies of SUBMERGED across Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk.

Results of my BookBub/Countdown promotion:
On Day 1 (Tuesday) SUBMERGED made Amazon's Top 100 overall bestseller list, which provides extra exposure to potential new readers. (This is the first time I made the Top 100 overall on the 1st day of a promo.) SUBMERGED remained in the Top 100 overall for the first 3 days of my promo. It remained in the Top 1000 overall for a week and in the Top 5000 overall for almost 2 weeks.

SUBMERGED also made Amazon.com’s Top 100 Movers & Shakers list, which provides extra exposure to potential new readers.

In the first 4 days of my promo (October 28-31) I sold* 2421 copies of SUBMERGED. Approx. 500 copies of SUBMERGED sold* in the first week of November (Nov 1-3). In the first 17 days of November I sold* 1000 copies of SUBMERGED. I sold* a total of 3421 copies of SUBMERGED on Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk during my promo and in the 14 days afterward.

Three of my other titles’ sales increased approx. 50% during and after the time SUBMERGED was on the Countdown deal.

SUBMERGED, sold from October 28 to November 3 inclusive, was on sale for $0.99, which earned me a 70% royalty (a perk of the Countdown deals) for most, or were KOLL/KU sales. I earned $1633 for SUBMERGED sales* in October; the majority of that income was created in the last 4 days of October.

When my Countdown deal was over, SUBMERGED sold for $4.99, which also earned me 70% royalties for most. I earned approx. $3000 for SUBMERGED sales* in the first 2 weeks of November. And even after those first 2 weeks, I still saw an increase in sales of SUBMERGED. Many of my other titles continued to sell at a higher rate than before this Countdown/BookBub promo.

I earned an approx. total of $4633 for SUBMERGED sales* during my BookBub/Countdown promo and in the 2 weeks following. I averaged a royalty of $1.36/sale.* From the $4633 I earned during this promo from one single title, I paid $1214 for 22 ads, which results in a $3419 profit. If I had to split my profit with a publisher at 50%, I still would have earned $1709.50 for this one single title and I still would’ve seen a profit.

My takeaway: RUNNING A BOOKBUB PROMO WITH A SELECT COUNTDOWN DEAL WORKS! I will do this again…and again.

PS: If BookBub turns one of your books down, try, try again!

*Sales data marked with an asterisk includes Countdown sales or after-Countdown sales plus KOLL and KU.

To summarize, I put SUBMERGED (a psychological thriller) on sale for $0.99 via a KDP Countdown deal on Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk from October 28 to November 17, 2015, and I sold 3421 copies. I paid $1214 for 22 ads (including BookBub--$500 Thrillers category), leaving me with a profit of $3419.

Authors: Submit your book to BookBub, and follow a similar marketing plan if they accept your work. I am sure you'll see great results.

Gott?
In this smoking hot trilogy by international bestselling author Cheryl Kaye Tardif, CFBI Agent Jasmine (Jasi) McLellan and her team of gifted psychics take on three tough murder cases, putting their lives at risk in their search for justice and truth.

DIVINE INTERVENTION - Jasi and her team members―Psychometric Empath and profiler Ben Roberts and Victim Empath Natassia Prushenko―are joined by Brandon Walsh, the handsome but skeptical Chief of Arson Investigations. In a manhunt that takes them from Vancouver to Kelowna, Penticton and Victoria, they are led down a twisting path of sinister secrets.

DIVINE JUSTICE - CFBI Agent and Pyro-Psychic Jasi McLellan battles a serious infection that threatens to claim her life.

The Grim Reaper often came knocking when it was unexpected. That was
something Eileen Edwards had figured out years ago. So when the phone on her desk
rang at just after eight in the morning on Sunday, February 8th,
she knew it wouldn’t be good news.

“Call from Law-ree Nor-man,” the androgynous call display voice told
her.

Constable Larry Norman was a detective in Vancouver’s Gang Task
Force—and her former partner.

Eileen picked up the phone and grimaced as a twinge of pain shot
through her right hand. “Sorry I can’t come to the phone right now. Please
leave your name and—”

“Really, Eileen? Is that the best you can do?”

“—after the beep. Beeeep.”

There was a slight pause. Then Larry said, “You done?”

She sighed and adjusted her reading glasses. “I hope this is a crank
call.”

“I need a favor. I need you to find a street kid named Zipper.”

“You do know this is Family Day weekend and my first weekend off in forever.”

“But you’re already up and working anyway,” Larry said.

Eileen leaned back in the chair and glanced across the room. The
white letters on the glass door of the office reminded her that E.Y.E. Spy Investigations had bills to
pay. “How do you know? Maybe you woke me.”

Larry chuckled. “You’re in your office. I can hear your printer
gasping for breath in the background.”

She glared at the hefty, aging machine that was busy groaning and
vomiting up paper like Linda Blair puking up pea soup. Maybe the printer needed
an exorcism. Papers scattered on the floor told her she’d forgotten to extend
the catch tray again. Another sheet shot out, and she caught it before it hit
the floor with the others.

“You know, you should really trade that antique in for a modern
printer,” Larry said. “Maybe one built after 1990.”

“It works fine. Now what’s so important about this Zippy kid?”

“Zipper.”

“What did he do—kill someone?”

“No, the opposite. We think he witnessed a murder.”

“Poor kid.” She sighed. “What do you know about him?”

“Not much. He’s about fourteen. No priors. His mother is dead.
Father unknown. He’s not a big kid—wears a Canucks cap and gets around by
skateboard.”

Eileen scribbled notes on the back of the paper. “What’s his real
name?”

“No idea. He was raised by the street. Everyone calls him Zipper.”

She frowned. “Is he a prostitute?”

“No. He’s just fast on a skateboard.”

“Then they should have called him Zippy. Tell me about the murder.”

“You know I’m not supposed to talk about an active GTF
investigation.”

“I need to know what I’m dealing with.”

“Okay,” Larry said, lowering his voice, “but you didn’t hear this
from me.”

You can be "immortalized" in one of the participating authors' upcoming books. Each author has donated one or more characters to be named after the highest bidders. Think of it! Your name as one of the characters--and perhaps your wife's, husband's, daughter's etc.

Cheryl's auction:

The highest bidder will name 2 characters in Cheryl's upcoming new thriller, THE 6th PLAGUE, which is set in Banff, Alberta, Canada, during the Banff World Media Festival. THE 6th PLAGUE will be released in the summer/fall of 2015.

Why is Cheryl participating?

"As an author who writes suspense, I am often influenced (and horrified) by true stories in the media, and it stuns me that human beings can be so cruel to one another, especially since torture is not only conducted in war zones but in civilized countries. We all bleed the same color; we all live and we all die, and those who have suffered at the hands of others need support and compassion."

Sitting on the
threadbare carpet in front of the living room fireplace, Marcus Taylor stroked
a military issue Browning 9mm pistol against his leg, the thirteen-round
magazine in his other hand. For an instant, he contemplated loading the gun―and
then using it.

"But then
who'd feed you?" he asked his companion.

Arizona, a
five-year-old red Irish setter, gave him an inquisitive look, then curled up
and went back to sleep on the couch. She was a rescue hound he'd picked up
about a year after Ryan and Jane had died. The house had been too damned quiet.
Lifeless.

"Great to
know you have an opinion."

Setting the gun
and magazine down on the floor, Marcus propped a photo album against his legs
and took a deep breath. The photo album
of death. The album only saw daylight three times a year. The other three
hundred and sixty-two days it was hidden in a steel foot locker that doubled as
his coffee table.

Today was Paul's
forty-sixth birthday. Or it would have been, except Paul was dead.

Taking another
measured breath, Marcus felt for the chain that marked a page and opened the
album. "Hey, Bro."

In the photo,
Corporal Paul Taylor stood on the shoulder of a deserted street on the
outskirts of a nondescript town in Afghanistan, a sniper rifle braced across
his chest and the Browning in his hand. He'd been killed that same day, his
limbs ripped apart by a roadside bomb. The IED had been buried in six inches of
dust and dirt when Paul, distracted by a crying kid, had unwittingly stepped on
it.

One stupid mistake
could end in death, separating son from parents and brother from brother.
Resentment could separate siblings too.

"I wish I
could tell you how sorry I am," Marcus said, blinking back a tear.
"We wasted so much time being pissed at each other."

As a young kid,
he'd hidden his older brother's toy soldiers so he could play with them when
Paul was at school. In high school, Marcus had hidden how smart he was, always
downplaying his intelligence in favor of being the cool, younger brother of
senior hockey legend Paul Taylor. Marcus had learned to hide his jealousy too.

Until his brother
was killed.

He stared at the
warped dog tag at the end of the chain. It was all that was left of his
brother. There was nothing to be jealous of now.

He glanced at the
gun. Okay, he had that too. He'd inherited the Browning from Paul. One of his
brother's war buddies had personally delivered it. "Your brother said you
can play with his toys now," the guy had said.

Paul always had a
warped sense of humor.

"Happy
birthday, Paul."

He knew his
parents, who were currently cruising in the Mediterranean, would be raising a
toast in Paul's honor, so he did the same. "I miss you, bro."

Then he dropped
the tag and flipped to the next set of photos in the album. A brunette with
short, choppy hair and luminous green eyes smiled back at him.

Jane.

"Hello,
Elf."

He traced her
face, recalling the way her mouth tilted upward on the left and how she'd watch
a chick flick tearjerker, while tears steamed unnoticed down her face.

Marcus turned to
the next set of photos and sucked in a breath. A handsome boy beamed a
brilliant smile and waved back at him.

"Hey, little
buddy."

He recalled the
day the photo had been taken. His son, Ryan, a rookie goalie on his junior high
hockey team, had shut out his opponents, giving his team a three-goal lead.
Jane had snapped the picture at the exact second when Ryan had found his father
in the crowd.

"I love
you." Marcus's voice cracked. "And I miss you so much."

He couldn't hide
that. Not ever.

There was one other
thing he couldn't hide.

He had killed
Jane. And Ryan.

For the past six
years, whenever Marcus slept, his dead wife and son came to visit, taunting him
with their spectral images, teasing him with familiar phrases, twisting his
mind and gut into a guilt-infested cesspool. The only way to escape their
accusing glares and spiteful smiles was to wake up. Or not go to sleep. Sleep
was the enemy. He did his best to avoid it.

Marcus glanced at
the antique clock on the mantle. 11:06.

Another
twenty-four minutes and he'd have to head to the Yellowhead County Emergency
Center, where he worked as a 911 dispatcher. He'd been working there for almost
six months. He was halfway through five twelve-hour shifts that ran from noon
to midnight. He worked them with his best friend, Leo, who would undoubtedly be
in a good mood again. Leo liked sleeping in and starting his day at noon, while
Marcus preferred the midnight-to-noon shift, the one everyone else hated. It
gave him something to do at night, since sleeping didn't come easily.

He closed the
photo album, stood slowly and stretched his cramped muscles. As he placed the
album and the gun and magazine back in the foot locker, a small cedar box with
a medical insignia embossed on the top caught his eye, though he did his best
to ignore it.

Even Arizona knew
that box was trouble. She froze at the sight of it, her hackles raised.

"I
know," Marcus said. "I can resist temptation."

That box had
gotten him into trouble on more than one occasion. It represented a past he'd
give anything to erase. But he couldn't toss it in the trash. It had too firm a
grip on him. Even now it called to him.

"Marcus…"

"No!"

He slammed the
foot locker lid with his fist. The sound reverberated across the room, clanging
like a jail cell door, trapping him in his own private prison.

Behind him,
Arizona whimpered.

"Sorry,
girl."

One day he'd get
rid of the box with the insignia and be done with it once and for all.

But not yet.

Shaking off a bout
of guilt, he took the stairs two at a time to the second floor and entered the
master bedroom of the two-bedroom rented duplex. It was devoid of all things
feminine, stripped down to the barest essentials. A bed, nightstand and tall
dresser. Metal blinds, no flowered curtains like the ones in the house in
Edmonton that he'd bought with Jane. The bedspread was a mishmash of brown
tones, and it had been hauled up over the single pillow. There were none of the
decorative pillows that Jane had loved so much. No silk flowers on the dresser.
No citrus Febreeze lingering in the air. No sign of Jane.

He'd hidden her
too.

Stepping into the
en suite bathroom, Marcus stared into the mirror. He took in the untrimmed
moustache and beard that was threatening to engulf his face. Leaning closer, he
examined his eyes, which were more gray than blue. He turned his face to catch
the light. "I am not
tired."

The dark circles
under his eyes betrayed him.

Ignoring Arizona's
watchful gaze, he opened the medicine cabinet and grabbed the tube of
Preparation H, a trick he'd learned from his wife Jane. Before he'd killed her.
A little dab under the eyes, no smiling or frowning, and within seconds the
crevices in his skin softened. Some of Jane's "White Out"—as she used
to call the tube of cosmetic concealer—and the shadows would disappear.

"Camouflage
on," he said to his reflection.

A memory of Jane
surfaced.

It was the night
of the BioWare awards banquet, nineteen years ago. Jane, dressed in a pink
housecoat, sat at the bathroom vanity curling her hair, while Marcus struggled
with his tie.

He'd let out a
curse. "I can never get this right."

"Here, let
me." Pushing the chair behind him, Jane climbed up before he could
protest. She caught his gaze in the mirror over the sink and reached around his
shoulders, her gaze wandering to the twisted lump he'd made of the full
Windsor. "You shouldn't be so impatient."

"You shouldn't be climbing up on
chairs."

"I'm fine,
Marcus."

"You're
pregnant, that's what you are."

"You calling
me fat, buster?"

Five months
pregnant with Ryan, Jane had never looked so beautiful.

"I'd never do
that," he replied.

She cocked her
head and arched one brow. "Never? How about in four months when I can't
walk up the stairs to the bedroom?"

"I'll carry
you."

"What about
when I can't see my toes and can't paint my toenails?"

"I'll paint
them for you."

"What about
when―"

He turned his head
and kissed her. That shut her up.

With a laugh, she
pushed him away, gave the tie a smooth tug and slid the knot expertly into
place.

He groaned.
"Now why can't I do that?"

"Because you
have me. Now quit distracting me. I still have to put on my dress and
makeup."

Marcus sat on the
edge of the bed and waited. Jane always made it worth the wait, and that night
she didn't disappoint him. When she emerged from the bathroom, she was a vision
of sultry goddess in a designer dress from a shop in West Edmonton Mall. The
baby bump in front was barely noticeable.

"How do I
look?" she asked, nervously fingering the fresh gold highlights in her
hair.

"Sexy as
hell."

She spun in a slow
circle to show off the sleek black dress with its plunging back. Peering over
one glitter-powdered shoulder, she said, "So you like my new dress?"

"I'd like it
better," he said in a soft voice, "if it was on the floor."

Minutes later,
they were entwined in the sheets, out of breath and laughing like teenagers.
Sex with Jane was always like that. Exciting. Youthful. Fun.

After dressing,
Jane retreated to the bathroom to fix her hair and makeup. "Camouflage
on," she said when she returned. "Now let's get going."

"Yes,
ma'am."

He heard her
whispering, "Six plus eight plus two…"

"Are you
doing that numerology thing again?" he asked with a grin.

Jane had gone to a
psychic fair when she'd found out she was pregnant, and a numerologist had
given her a lesson in adding dates. Ever since then, whenever something important
came up, she'd work out the numbers to determine if it was going to be a good
day or not. She even made Marcus buy lotto tickets on "three days,"
which she said meant money coming in. They hadn't won a lottery yet, but he
played along anyway.

"What is it
today?"

She smiled.
"A seven."

"Ah, lucky
seven." He arched a brow at her. "So I'm going to get lucky?"

"I think you
already did, mister."

They'd been late
for the awards banquet, which didn't go over too well since Jane was the guest
of honor, the recipient of a Best Programmer award for her latest video game
creation at BioWare. When Jane had stepped up on the stage to receive her
award, Marcus didn't think he could ever be prouder. Until the night Ryan was
born.

Let me tell you a bit
about Rebecca Kingston. She's a hardworking, devoted mother of two, with an
abusive husband who has a gambling problem. And she's had enough. Though not an
easy decision to make for most abused women, Rebecca knows she has to protect
her children and herself. So she sets things in motion…

Here's a peek at the
first time you meet Rebecca:

Rebecca Kingston
folded her arms across her down-filled jacket and tried not to shiver. Though
May had ended with a heat wave, the temperatures had dropped the first week of
June. It had rained for the first five days, and an arctic chill had swept
through the city. The weatherman blamed the erratic change in weather on global
warming and a cold front sweeping down from Alaska, while locals held one
source responsible. Their lifelong rival—Calgary.

"Can we get
an ice cream, Mommy?" four-year-old Ella said with a faint lisp, the
result of her recent contribution to the tooth fairy's necklace collection.

Rebecca laughed.
"It feels like winter again and you want ice cream?"

"Yes,
please."

"I guess we
have time."

They hurried
across the street to the corner store.

"Strawberry
this time," Ella said, her blue eyes pleading.

Rebecca sighed.
"Eat it slowly. Did you remember Puff?"

Her daughter
nodded. "In my pocket."

"Good
girl." Rebecca glanced at her watch. "It's almost five. Let's
go."

Her cell phone
rang. It was Carter Billingsley, her lawyer.

"Mr. Billingsley,"
she said. "I'm glad you got my message."

"So you've
decided to get away," he said. "That's a very good idea."

"I need a
break." She glanced at Ella. "Things are going to get ugly, aren't
they?"

"Unfortunately,
yes. Divorce is never pretty. But you'll get through it."

"Thanks, Mr.
Billingsley."

"Take care,
Rebecca."

Carter had once
been her grandfather's lawyer and Grandpa Bob had highly recommended him—if
Rebecca ever needed someone to handle her divorce. In his late sixties, Carter
filled that father-figure left void after her father's passing.

Her thoughts raced
to her twelve-year-old son. Colton's team was up against one of the toughest
junior high hockey teams from Regina. With Colton as the Edmonton team's
goalie, most of the pressure was on him. He was a brave boy.

She bit her bottom
lip, wishing she were as brave.

You're a coward, Becca.

"You're too
codependent," her mother always said.

Rebecca figured
that wasn't actually her fault. She'd been fortunate to have strong male role
models in her life. Men who ran companies with iron fists and made decisions
after careful consideration. Or at least worked hard to provide for their
families. Men like Grandpa Bob and her father. Men who could be trusted to make
the right decisions.

Not like Wesley.

Even her
grandfather hadn't liked him. When Grandpa Bob passed away two years ago, he'd
sent a clear message to everyone that Wesley couldn't be trusted. Grandpa Bob
had lived a miser's lifestyle. No one knew how much money he'd saved for that
"rainy day"—until he was gone and Colton and Ella became
beneficiaries of over eight hundred thousand dollars from the sale of Grandpa
Bob's house and business.

Grandpa Bob, in
his infinite wisdom, had added two major conditions to the inheritance. Money
could only be withdrawn from the account if it was spent on Ella or Colton. And
Rebecca was the sole person with signing power.

Wesley moped
around the house for days when he heard the conditions. Any time she bought the
kids new clothes, he'd sneer at her and say, "Hope you used your
grandfather's money for those."

Once when he'd
gambled most of his paycheck, he begged her for a "loan," and when
she'd voiced that she didn't have the money, he slapped her. "Lying bitch!
You've got almost a million dollars at your fingertips. All I'm asking for is
thirty-five hundred. I'll pay it back."

She'd refused and
paid the price, physically.
