Special Guest: Judy Penz Sheluk interviews character Calamity Barnstable from SKELETONS IN THE ATTIC

Judy Penz Sheluk’s latest release is Skeletons in the Attic, the first book in the Marketville Mystery Series, and her first title with Imajin Books. The protagonist in Skeletons is Calamity (Callie) Barnstable, a thirty-six-year-old woman from Toronto. Judy recently sat down with Callie in her new home to find out why she moved to the commuter town of Marketville, which is located about an hour north of Toronto.

Judy: You’re thirty-six and single. By your own admission, Marketville is the sort of town where folks with two kids, a cat, and a collie come to live. Why the move?

Callie: Trust me, it wasn’t my idea. My father died recently in an at-work accident and he left me this house. I didn’t even know the house existed, if you can believe that. On top of it all, in order to inherit, I have to live here for a year.

Judy: The house needs some work, but how bad could it be? Plus I caught a glimpse of your next-door neighbor. He’s handsome in that hunky reality TV handyman sort of way, and I didn’t spot a wedding band.

Callie: That would be Royce Ashford, and yes, he’s hot and single. [blushes] But you didn’t let me finish. In order to inherit, I have to try and find out who murdered my mother thirty years ago.

Judy: Wow. Your mom was murdered when you were six? That must have been hard on you and your father.

Callie: I’m sure it was hard on my dad, especially since her body was never found and he was considered a suspect. But until the reading of the will, I always thought my mother had left us for the milkman or some other male equivalent. So the big shocker was finding out that my dad had kept the true story away from me all these years. I suppose that’s why we moved to Toronto when I was seven. I don’t have any real memories of living here, though I’m starting to get the odd flashback.

Judy: Why would your father put that clause in the will? Do you have a background in investigation?

Callie: Hardly. Before I moved here, I worked in a bank call center. But I’ve already found a few things in the house that have provided clues to my mother’s past. [shivers] Not everything was a welcome find. One of the things I found was a skeleton in the attic.

Judy: A skeleton? In the attic?

Callie: Uh huh. Among other things. I’d rather not say any more about it. Can we switch subjects?

Judy: Of course. Do you have anyone helping you?

Callie: [laughs] There’s this self-proclaimed psychic, Misty Rivers. She managed to convince my dad that she could help find out what happened to my mother—for a fee, of course. As if I was going to fall for that.

Judy: This sounds like it would make a great book. Do you mind if I write about your experience trying to solve a thirty-year-old mystery?

Callie: Let me pour you a cup of tea. If you’re going to write a book about me, I have a whole lot more to tell you…

Guest Interview: Andy Peloquin and his new book, BLADE THE DESTROYER

Today I'm featuring a special guest--author Andy Peloquin. Andy is participating in a blog tour to promote his newest release, BLADE OF THE DESTROYER, book 1 in The Last Bucelarii series.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I think the writing bug hit me around the age of 15. I had a lot of free time at that age, and no real friends to speak of. I gravitated more to solo activities. I was always pretty handy with the computer. When I saw that many of my online "friends" were writing, I thought I'd give it a try. I found it wasn't bad at it--even won an online competition with a short piece of prose.

I wrote off and on until the age of 20, when life conspired to fill my time with a host of other activities. I didn't start writing fiction again until the age of 25, but once I picked up that creative pen, I was totally hooked. Hardly a day has gone by since that I haven't written something!

What is your work schedule like when you're writing?

Well, it really depends on the day of the week. :D

Monday through Thursday, I can usually only fit in about two hours of writing--one in the morning, and one in the afternoon.

Friday, I can fit a couple of hours in the morning, and I've reserved Friday afternoon as sacred writing time. I usually get between 2 and 3 hours Friday PM before my family wants to go out.

Saturday morning is also reserved for writing. My wife works from 6 to 10 AM, so I'll usually take advantage of that time to sit down and get some writing in--even if it means getting up at 6 AM on a Saturday!

How long on average does it take you to write a book?

That's an interesting question…

It really depends on how much time I can dedicate to it. I will usually take about 6 weeks per draft, with a break of 6 weeks between each draft. So right now, I'm 75% of the way done with Book 2, working through Book 3, and writing a second unrelated series. I've got it down to a fine art. Usually from the moment I start writing the first word of the rough draft until it's ready for submission to the editor/publisher will be about six months.

If this book is part of a series, tell us a little about it?

This book is part of a series, and one that I'm very excited to write.

The first book starts out in the city of Voramis, and lots of fascinating, intriguing, and heart-wrenching things happen. The Hunter finds out more about the past he has forgotten, discovers the truth of his demonic heritage, and realizes that he's more than just a remorseless killing machine.

Over the next 4 or 5 books (still not sure how many it will end up being), he continues to evolve as a person while finding more about his past, his "destiny" (which he is totally averse to fulfilling), and the truth of demons on the world of Einan.

There's plenty of story to keep you interested, but I'm trying to make it a character-driven piece. It's all about the Hunter and his personal journey.

The main character in your book is covered in scars--one for each person he has killed using his accursed dagger. Do you have any scars? What are they from?

I don't have quite as many scars as the Hunter does, but I have my fair share!

My hands are covered in scars from various car accidents, stupid childish things (playing with knives), work scars, etc.

My right elbow had a shard of glass embedded in it for about two months, so the scar is still visible.

I put my right knee through a pane of glass.

Those are probably the most visible scars.

What are your thoughts on writing a book series?

I LOVE series--probably more than standalone books. I feel like a series is the best way to really get to know and fall in love with a character. I have read many excellent standalone novels, but for me and my writing abilities, I like what a series enables me to do with the character and his journey.

Do you proofread/edit all your own books or do you get someone to do that for you?

I proofread and edit my own work multiple times, but I also have a professional editor to do it as well. Thanks to my publisher--J Ellington Ashton Press--I get at least two wonderful editors to slice and dice the book and polish the writing.

Do you think that the cover plays an important part in the buying process?

ABSOLUTELY! In fact, the cover is almost more important than the book itself, especially in the world of online marketing/sales. A good cover can sell a book that may be a bit iffy. Of course, I'm not relying on my AMAZING cover to sell the book. I'm definitely making sure that it's as good as I can make it--on par with the works published by the bigger houses and more famous authors.

How are you publishing this book and why (e.g. Indie, traditional or both)?

I indie published my first book, but with this book (and the series), I wanted to go with a publishing house. I wanted multiple eyes to help me polish the final product, because I know that it has the potential to be something truly great.

What are your thoughts on good/bad reviews?

I LOVE both! Good reviews always make me feel warm and fuzzy inside, but bad reviews help me to improve my writing. I got a few bad reviews on my first novel, and I used them to improve my writing style, plot, and overall writing ability for this book. It's thanks to those bad reviews that this new novel is as good as it is!

Do you read your reviews? Do you respond to them, good or bad? Do you have any advice on how to deal with the bad?

I absolutely read the reviews. There will always be the occasional "troll" who leaves a crappy review just for the heck of it. But for the most part, the reviews offer at least a glimpse into what made the book less than appealing to that person. If I can make the next book better, I will turn that person into a reader/fan.

Do you think that giving books away free works and why?

I love giving away books! I'm actually giving away my first novel--In the Days: A Tale of the Forgotten Continent--on my website (http://andypeloquin.com/books) right now. I feel like my book is something that people will enjoy, so I want to get it into as many people's hands as possible. It may not earn me a ton of money, but it's a way to build my platform as an author and get more fans.

How do you relax?

I'm a total comic book nerd! I love to read just about anything Marvel puts out, and I keep up with all of the latest digital comics. I'm a TV buff, but I like to hit the gym, cook for my family, lounge around with a good book, or relax on the beach. I've got relaxing down to a pretty fine art.

Here's an oddball for you: If you were an animal in a zoo, what would you be?

Ask anyone who knows me, and they'd probably say "a bear"--and I'd agree. I'm a large, hairy, friendly guy, with a pretty mild temperament but hella fierce when I get pissed off. Definitely a bear!

Thank you, Andy, for sharing a piece of yourself here on The Suspense is Killing Me.

An Excerpt from SUBMERGED by Cheryl Kaye Tardif

Chapter One

Edson, AB – Thursday, June 13, 2013 – 10:55 AM

Sitting on the threadbare carpet in front of the living room fireplace, Marcus Taylor stroked a military issue Browning 9mm pistol against his leg, the thirteen-round magazine in his other hand. For an instant, he contemplated loading the gun―and then using it.
"But then who'd feed you?" he asked his companion.
Arizona, a five-year-old red Irish setter, gave him an inquisitive look, then curled up and went back to sleep on the couch. She was a rescue hound he'd picked up about a year after Ryan and Jane had died. The house had been too damned quiet. Lifeless.
"Great to know you have an opinion."
Setting the gun and magazine down on the floor, Marcus propped a photo album against his legs and took a deep breath. The photo album of death. The album only saw daylight three times a year. The other three hundred and sixty-two days it was hidden in a steel foot locker that doubled as his coffee table.
Today was Paul's forty-sixth birthday. Or it would have been, except Paul was dead.
Taking another measured breath, Marcus felt for the chain that marked a page and opened the album. "Hey, Bro."
In the photo, Corporal Paul Taylor stood on the shoulder of a deserted street on the outskirts of a nondescript town in Afghanistan, a sniper rifle braced across his chest and the Browning in his hand. He'd been killed that same day, his limbs ripped apart by a roadside bomb. The IED had been buried in six inches of dust and dirt when Paul, distracted by a crying kid, had unwittingly stepped on it.
One stupid mistake could end in death, separating son from parents and brother from brother. Resentment could separate siblings too.
"I wish I could tell you how sorry I am," Marcus said, blinking back a tear. "We wasted so much time being pissed at each other."
As a young kid, he'd hidden his older brother's toy soldiers so he could play with them when Paul was at school. In high school, Marcus had hidden how smart he was, always downplaying his intelligence in favor of being the cool, younger brother of senior hockey legend Paul Taylor. Marcus had learned to hide his jealousy too.
Until his brother was killed.
He stared at the warped dog tag at the end of the chain. It was all that was left of his brother. There was nothing to be jealous of now.
He glanced at the gun. Okay, he had that too. He'd inherited the Browning from Paul. One of his brother's war buddies had personally delivered it. "Your brother said you can play with his toys now," the guy had said.
Paul always had a warped sense of humor.
"Happy birthday, Paul."
He knew his parents, who were currently cruising in the Mediterranean, would be raising a toast in Paul's honor, so he did the same. "I miss you, bro."
Then he dropped the tag and flipped to the next set of photos in the album. A brunette with short, choppy hair and luminous green eyes smiled back at him.
Jane.
"Hello, Elf."
He traced her face, recalling the way her mouth tilted upward on the left and how she'd watch a chick flick tearjerker, while tears steamed unnoticed down her face.
Marcus turned to the next set of photos and sucked in a breath. A handsome boy beamed a brilliant smile and waved back at him.
"Hey, little buddy."
He recalled the day the photo had been taken. His son, Ryan, a rookie goalie on his junior high hockey team, had shut out his opponents, giving his team a three-goal lead. Jane had snapped the picture at the exact second when Ryan had found his father in the crowd.
"I love you." Marcus's voice cracked. "And I miss you so much."
He couldn't hide that. Not ever.
There was one other thing he couldn't hide.
He had killed Jane. And Ryan.
For the past six years, whenever Marcus slept, his dead wife and son came to visit, taunting him with their spectral images, teasing him with familiar phrases, twisting his mind and gut into a guilt-infested cesspool. The only way to escape their accusing glares and spiteful smiles was to wake up. Or not go to sleep. Sleep was the enemy. He did his best to avoid it.
Marcus glanced at the antique clock on the mantle. 11:06.
Another twenty-four minutes and he'd have to head to the Yellowhead County Emergency Center, where he worked as a 911 dispatcher. He'd been working there for almost six months. He was halfway through five twelve-hour shifts that ran from noon to midnight. He worked them with his best friend, Leo, who would undoubtedly be in a good mood again. Leo liked sleeping in and starting his day at noon, while Marcus preferred the midnight-to-noon shift, the one everyone else hated. It gave him something to do at night, since sleeping didn't come easily.
He closed the photo album, stood slowly and stretched his cramped muscles. As he placed the album and the gun and magazine back in the foot locker, a small cedar box with a medical insignia embossed on the top caught his eye, though he did his best to ignore it.
Even Arizona knew that box was trouble. She froze at the sight of it, her hackles raised.
"I know," Marcus said. "I can resist temptation."
That box had gotten him into trouble on more than one occasion. It represented a past he'd give anything to erase. But he couldn't toss it in the trash. It had too firm a grip on him. Even now it called to him.
"Marcus…"
"No!"
He slammed the foot locker lid with his fist. The sound reverberated across the room, clanging like a jail cell door, trapping him in his own private prison.
Behind him, Arizona whimpered.
"Sorry, girl."
One day he'd get rid of the box with the insignia and be done with it once and for all.
But not yet.
Shaking off a bout of guilt, he took the stairs two at a time to the second floor and entered the master bedroom of the two-bedroom rented duplex. It was devoid of all things feminine, stripped down to the barest essentials. A bed, nightstand and tall dresser. Metal blinds, no flowered curtains like the ones in the house in Edmonton that he'd bought with Jane. The bedspread was a mishmash of brown tones, and it had been hauled up over the single pillow. There were none of the decorative pillows that Jane had loved so much. No silk flowers on the dresser. No citrus Febreeze lingering in the air. No sign of Jane.
He'd hidden her too.
Stepping into the en suite bathroom, Marcus stared into the mirror. He took in the untrimmed moustache and beard that was threatening to engulf his face. Leaning closer, he examined his eyes, which were more gray than blue. He turned his face to catch the light. "I am not tired."
The dark circles under his eyes betrayed him.
Ignoring Arizona's watchful gaze, he opened the medicine cabinet and grabbed the tube of Preparation H, a trick he'd learned from his wife Jane. Before he'd killed her. A little dab under the eyes, no smiling or frowning, and within seconds the crevices in his skin softened. Some of Jane's "White Out"—as she used to call the tube of cosmetic concealer—and the shadows would disappear.
"Camouflage on," he said to his reflection.
A memory of Jane surfaced.
It was the night of the BioWare awards banquet, nineteen years ago. Jane, dressed in a pink housecoat, sat at the bathroom vanity curling her hair, while Marcus struggled with his tie.
He'd let out a curse. "I can never get this right."
"Here, let me." Pushing the chair behind him, Jane climbed up before he could protest. She caught his gaze in the mirror over the sink and reached around his shoulders, her gaze wandering to the twisted lump he'd made of the full Windsor. "You shouldn't be so impatient."
"You shouldn't be climbing up on chairs."
"I'm fine, Marcus."
"You're pregnant, that's what you are."
"You calling me fat, buster?"
Five months pregnant with Ryan, Jane had never looked so beautiful.
"I'd never do that," he replied.
She cocked her head and arched one brow. "Never? How about in four months when I can't walk up the stairs to the bedroom?"
"I'll carry you."
"What about when I can't see my toes and can't paint my toenails?"
"I'll paint them for you."
"What about when―"
He turned his head and kissed her. That shut her up.
With a laugh, she pushed him away, gave the tie a smooth tug and slid the knot expertly into place.
He groaned. "Now why can't I do that?"
"Because you have me. Now quit distracting me. I still have to put on my dress and makeup."
Marcus sat on the edge of the bed and waited. Jane always made it worth the wait, and that night she didn't disappoint him. When she emerged from the bathroom, she was a vision of sultry goddess in a designer dress from a shop in West Edmonton Mall. The baby bump in front was barely noticeable.
"How do I look?" she asked, nervously fingering the fresh gold highlights in her hair.
"Sexy as hell."
She spun in a slow circle to show off the sleek black dress with its plunging back. Peering over one glitter-powdered shoulder, she said, "So you like my new dress?"
"I'd like it better," he said in a soft voice, "if it was on the floor."
Minutes later, they were entwined in the sheets, out of breath and laughing like teenagers. Sex with Jane was always like that. Exciting. Youthful. Fun.
After dressing, Jane retreated to the bathroom to fix her hair and makeup. "Camouflage on," she said when she returned. "Now let's get going."
"Yes, ma'am."
He heard her whispering, "Six plus eight plus two…"
"Are you doing that numerology thing again?" he asked with a grin.
Jane had gone to a psychic fair when she'd found out she was pregnant, and a numerologist had given her a lesson in adding dates. Ever since then, whenever something important came up, she'd work out the numbers to determine if it was going to be a good day or not. She even made Marcus buy lotto tickets on "three days," which she said meant money coming in. They hadn't won a lottery yet, but he played along anyway.
"What is it today?"
She smiled. "A seven."
"Ah, lucky seven." He arched a brow at her. "So I'm going to get lucky?"
"I think you already did, mister."
They'd been late for the awards banquet, which didn't go over too well since Jane was the guest of honor, the recipient of a Best Programmer award for her latest video game creation at BioWare. When Jane had stepped up on the stage to receive her award, Marcus didn't think he could ever be prouder. Until the night Ryan was born.
Ryan…the son I killed.
Marcus gave his head a jerk, forcing the memories back into the shadows―where they belonged. He picked up the can of shaving cream. His eyes rested, unfocused, on the label.
To shave or not to shave. That was the question.
"Nah, not today," he muttered.
He hadn't shaved in weeks. He was also overdue for a haircut. Thankfully, they weren't too strict about appearances at work, though his supervisor would probably harp on it again.
The alarm on his watch beeped.
He had twenty minutes to get to the center. Then he'd get back to hiding behind the anonymity of being a faceless voice on the phone…

The Story Behind the Book

There are actually two stories behind my new thriller, SUBMERGED. It was inspired by my fear of being trapped in a submerged vehicle and also by a long-time friend who dealt with drug addiction while on the job as a paramedic.

I've traveled a lot by car, even coast to coast across Canada, more than once. I've also lived near water, whether an ocean, river or lake. Ever since I was young, I would grow tense if our vehicle drifted too close to an embankment that separated us from a body of water. Even to this day, I tense up when the car I'm in gets too close to water. Having a wild imagination isn't always a good thing; I often envision the car jettisoning into the water and then slowly sinking. Drowning has been a deep fear of mine and I have often wondered how I'd get out if I found myself in that situation.

Marcus's character grew from a high school friend, who shared very personal details about his life, his former paramedic career and his addiction challenges. I am inspired by him because he managed to turn his life around. He now has a wonderful wife and family, and a new career. His story reminds me that we CAN change. We CAN make our lives better. And it starts with a choice. He chose not to let addiction rule or define him. I admire that.

Sneak Peek of "Marcus Taylor" from SUBMERGED

Let me tell you a bit about Marcus Taylor. He's a former paramedic who became addicted to painkillers while on the job. He was released from that position when his drug use became obvious and jeopardized everyone around him. He now works at a 911 center in Edson, Alberta, Canada.

He is a widow; his wife and son died in a car accident a few years ago. He is a good man and was a good husband and father, regardless of his addiction. But now he is plagued by guilt to the point that he sees their ghosts in his dreams—and sometimes when he's awake.

Marcus is broken, submerged in guilt and remorse, and doing his best to make up for past sins.

Here is a sneak peek at Marcus. I hope you'll find him redeeming.

Ever Play Chicken?

You're probably all familiar with the deadly game of "Playing Chicken." Usually this is a teen thing; drive towards oncoming traffic and the most cowardly veers off at the last minute—hence, he's the "chicken." Why would someone do this? For the adrenaline rush, some say. Or for the honor of being thought of as the bravest. Or because they think they have something to prove to others.

Most of us would consider this game just plain stupid. And highly dangerous. But many of us aren't aware that we're involved in our own versions of "Playing Chicken." Ever put yourself in a situation of risk, only to bail out at the first sign of challenge? Ever decide not to do something because you're afraid of it? It's a natural reaction. Self-preservation. Sometimes, though, it becomes a form of self-sabotage.

In SUBMERGED, Marcus Taylor has lived for years "Playing Chicken." As a recovering addict he knows what it's like to be in a head-on collision course of disaster. He doesn't need a vehicle; drugs are his weapon of choice and his adrenaline rush. He told himself he needed them in order to be an effective paramedic working long hours and witnessing horrific tragedies weekly, sometimes daily. But he lost control, nearly crashing, coming close to death. Until instinct kicked in and he veered off the path.

Marcus lives with his guilt, like many of us live with a family member. He feeds it, strokes it, gives it life. He thinks he's done "Playing Chicken," but he's not. He has slipped into a life of monotony, taking no risks, making no new connections, seeing a bleak future. He has veered off the road of Life, chickened out.

Until he takes a call while working as a 911 dispatcher, and he has no time for "Playing Chicken." He is spurred into action, driven by the need for redemption, and his life changes forever.

"Submerged reads like an approaching storm, full of darkness, dread and electricity. Prepare for your skin to crawl."
—Andrew Gross, New York Times bestselling author of 15 Seconds

Two strangers submerged in guilt, brought together by fate…

After a tragic car accident claims the lives of his wife, Jane, and son, Ryan, Marcus Taylor is immersed in grief. But his family isn't the only thing he has lost. An addiction to painkillers has taken away his career as a paramedic. Working as a 911 operator is now the closest he gets to redemption—until he gets a call from a woman trapped in a car.

Rebecca Kingston yearns for a quiet weekend getaway, so she can think about her impending divorce from her abusive husband. When a mysterious truck runs her off the road, she is pinned behind the steering wheel, unable to help her two children in the back seat. Her only lifeline is a cell phone with a quickly depleting battery and a stranger's calm voice on the other end telling her everything will be all right.

Recipe for a Bestselling Novel

Wouldn't it be great if there was a recipe for making a bestselling novel and if all a writer had to do was gather the ingredients and mix them in, and voila!―a bestselling novel is created? The reality is there are combinations of ingredients that can either get your name on a bestseller's list or fall flatter than an airless cheese soufflé. However, there are some common ingredients that have helped authors achieve bestseller status.

Ingredients for a Bestseller:

·         1 cup of well written novel
·         1 cup of professional editing
·         1 cup of professional layout and interior design
·         2 cups of professional book cover, including gripping back cover text
·         1 cup of decent distribution via major online retailers
·         2 cups of book launch, tours and other events, plus advertising
·         3 cups of contests and giveaways by author, publisher or both
·         Countless hours of organization and time
·         Generous dash of excitement

Method:

Take the well written novel and beat in professional editing until light and readable. Add professional layout and interior design, then stir in professional cover art and back cover text until well combined. Sprinkle in decent distribution until coated and roll mixture out with book launch, tours and events. Top with contests and giveaways, and fold in countless hours of organization and time before adding the finishing touch―a huge dash of excitement. Share with everyone and enjoy!

Reality Check:

While the recipe above may seem kind of silly, these ingredients can lead to a bestselling novel. I know because I've used them all successfully. My novels have made bestsellers lists multiple times on Amazon. Some of my novels are international bestsellers, some are national bestsellers, all have made multiple Top 100 genre lists on Amazon, and a couple have made the coveted prize of Top 100 bestsellers overall on Amazon. That's out of nearly 2 million ebooks.

Check out my hold-your-breath thriller, SUBMERGED. It is a tale of guilt, fear, greed, addiction and redemption, and I know you're going to love it.

"Tardif once again delivers a suspenseful supernatural masterpiece."
—Scott Nicholson, international bestselling author of The Home

Author Kim Cresswell talks about "The Perfect Blend of Romance and Suspense"

First, I'd like to welcome my good friend, Kim Cresswell, to my blog. Take it away, Kim! :-)

I love writing and reading romantic suspense because not only does the suspense provide instant tension in a story, I love the push-pull-tug-of-war of romance.

Will the hero and heroine get together?

Will they overcome the conflict and live happily ever after?

In my debut romantic suspense, REFLECTION ( A Whitney Steel Novel ), my heroine, reporter Whitney Steel is investigating an alleged human cloning project when she meets up with the hero, undercover FBI Agent Blake Neely, who is searching for his own answers. Everything from this point on focuses on Blake and Whitney discovering whether or not the villain has produced the world's first cloned human.

The relationship between the hero and heroine evolves because of the suspense.

So what is the perfect blend of romance and suspense? In my opinion—a kick-ass heroine, a hot FBI agent, sizzling romance, murder, and lots and lots of mayhem!

Blurb:

Florida investigative reporter, Whitney Steel, has lived in the shadow of her legendary father long enough. To prove herself she needs to find the "Big" story.

She found it. Now it may kill her.

After receiving a lead pointing to the world's first cloned human, now a small child, Whitney vows to unravel the truth. However, sifting through the facts proves to have dangerous results, including death threats and murder. When she's nearly killed, but is saved by undercover FBI Special Agent, Blake Neely, he refuses to let her get in the way of his own objective—at least not right away.

Caught in a lethal game between a billionaire obsessed with genetic perfection, his hit man's thirst for retribution, and a Colombian drug lord fresh out of prison determined to make Blake pay for his twin brother's death over a decade ago...

Can they save an innocent child before it's too late?

Faced with tough choices, with deadly consequences for many—Whitney soon realizes that sometimes a story becomes more than just a story.

Read an excerpt of the international bestselling supernatural thriller, CHILDREN OF THE FOG

Today's my 50th birthday and I thought I would celebrate by giving away prizes and this free excerpt from CHILDREN OF THE FOG...

prologue

May 14th, 2007

She was ready to die.
She sat at the kitchen table, a half empty bottle of Philip's precious red wine in one hand, a loaded gun in the other. Staring at the foreign chunk of metal, she willed it to vanish. But it didn't.
Sadie checked the gun and noted the single bullet.
"One's all you need."
If she did it right.
She placed the gun on the table and glanced at a pewter-framed photograph that hung off-kilter above the mantle of the fireplace. It was illuminated by a vanilla-scented candle, one of many that threw flickering shadows over the rough wood walls of the log cabin.
Sam's sweet face stared back at her, smiling.
Alive.
From where she sat, she could see the small chip in his right front tooth, the result of an impatient father raising the training wheels too early. But there was no point in blaming Philip—not when they'd both lost so much.
Not when it's all my fault.
Her gaze swept over the mantle. There were three objects on it besides the candle. Two envelopes, one addressed to Leah and one to Philip, and the portfolio case that contained the illustrations and manuscript on disc for Sam's book.
She had finished it, just like she had promised.
"And promises can't be broken. Right, Sam?"
A single tear burned a path down her cheek.
Sam was gone.
What reason do I have for living now?
She gulped back the last pungent mouthful of Cabernet and dropped the empty bottle. It rolled under the chair, unbroken, rocking on the hardwood floor. Then all was silent, except the antique grandfather clock in the far corner. Its ticking reminded her of the clown's shoe. The one with the tack in it.
Tick, tick, tick…
The clock belched out an ominous gong.
It was almost midnight.
Almost time.
She drew an infinity symbol in the dust on the table.
"Sadie and Sam. For all eternity."
Gong…
She swallowed hard as tears flooded her eyes. "I'm sorry I couldn't save you, baby. I tried to. God, I tried. Forgive me, Sam." Her words ended in a gut-wrenching moan.
Something scraped the window beside her.
She pressed her face to the frosted glass, then jerked back with a gasp. "Go away!"
They stood motionless—six children that drifted from the swirling miasma of night air, haunting her nights and every waking moment. Surrounded by the moonlit fog, they began to chant. "One fine day, in the middle of the night…"
"You're not real," she whispered.
"Two dead boys got up to fight."
A small, pale hand splayed against the exterior of the window. Below it, droplets of condensation slid like tears down the glass.
She reached out, matching her hand to the child's. Shivering, she pulled away. "You don't exist."
The clock continued its morbid countdown.
As the alcohol and drug potpourri kicked in, the room began to spin and her stomach heaved. She inhaled deeply. She couldn't afford to get sick. Sam was waiting for her.
Tears spilled down her cheeks. "I'm ready."
Gong…
Without hesitation, she raised the gun to her temple.
"Don't!" the children shrieked.
She pressed the gun against her flesh. The tip of the barrel was cold. Like her hands, her feet...her heart.
A sob erupted from the back of her throat.
The clock let out a final gong. Then it was deathly silent.
It was midnight.
Her eyes found Sam's face again.
"Happy Mother's Day, Sadie."
She took a steadying breath, pushed the gun hard against her skin and clamped her eyes shut.
"Mommy's coming, Sam."
She squeezed the trigger.

A review of LET THE DEAD SLEEP by Heather Graham

I'm a long-time fan of Heather Graham, and while this isn't my #1 favorite of hers, LET THE DEAD SLEEP is an intriguing, fun read. Heather delivers the eerie paranormal twists that she is known for, while creating a plot that is creepy and populated by quirky characters.

In this paranormal thriller, Heather takes a somewhat ordinary object and turns it into an element of terror. She never fails to deliver a great read. So if you're looking for pure entertainment, check this one out.

PS: I received a free ARC in exchange for an honest review.
