Today someone asked me what I would recommend with regards to the 5 days of free promo you get with Select, what days are better and how should one break the 5 days up. While I feel there's still room to experiment some more, this is what I said:
With Divine Intervention, a mystery about psychic agents searching for a
serial killer (and book 1 in a series), I used up all 5 days. It was my first
book enrolled in Select and I thought I’d go in strong. What I noticed was that
free downloads were relatively consistent and strong for the first 2 days and
then less for the last 3 days.
I set up my technothriller The River for a 2 day free promo (which
overlapped with the 3/4th days of the promo for DI. It shot ahead in the 2 day
promo and ended up with more downloads in those 2 days than DI had in 5.
In the past these 2 titles have sold relatively evenly, with The River
maybe a few copies ahead of DI, definitely not such high numbers as in this
promo time. This leads me to believe that one would be better off scheduling a
2-day promo and either a 3-day promo, or two 2-days and a 1.
I found that for an author who has done decently in sales but is not a big
name author it takes 2 days to get the sales rank down low enough to really make
a difference—ie. getting the book listed on multiple bestsellers lists.
My promo for DI ran Saturday to Wednesday; The River’s promo ran Monday and
Tuesday. Most people download ebooks on the weekend, so my results for TR
surprised me.
As for after sales, The River is still doing WAY above normal in sales. I
am stunned by the numbers compared to my normal average. I estimate I am selling
10-15 TIMES more. But I believe it has a more universal appeal and a wider
target audience, whereas DI appeals to a slightly smaller audience. Divine
Intervention’s after sales have been steady and higher than normal, but even
more, the sales for Divine Justice are much higher than usual. Even 10/11 days after these promos ended.
If you have found my experiment helpful, please consider picking up a copy of THE RIVER or DIVINE INTERVENTION and leaving me an honest review. Thank you.
P.S. I'm getting ready to put up another title--2 actually. I'll let you know what happens. :-)

Cheryl, thanks for taking the time to document your experience. This is all new, and every author should be paying close attention to all available information.
I'm in the first day of a two-day free promo for my thriller, THE LONELY MILE, and if anyone qualifies as "not a big name author," it's me!
My downloads through the first day are far beyond what I expected, landing TLM, so far, at #19 among all free titles and #3 in all free titles in the Thriller category.
I'm hoping the numbers stay equally strong tomorrow, but am most curious about what happens, both with TLM and with my other novels, when the two-day promo ends. If I can duplicate your experience of 10-15 times the normal sales for ten days following, I'll be both amazed AND thrilled.
Thanks again and I'll let you know what happens...
I hope you BEAT my numbers, Al. :-) Then I'll beat yours. And so on and so on... lol
Good luck!
Hey there! I'm so glad you made this post. It definitely helped me to understand KDP better. I have some questions, though. First, do you think it's better to spread your five days, or use them all at once? Some say readers buy more over the weekend, so that's the time they choose to have their books free. What do you think?
Hi Tiffany, thanks for dropping by. I found that when I did the promo for 5 days for Divine Intervention, the downloads slowed at the end of day 2 and even more by day 3. When I did the 2 day promo for The River, the downloads remained high up to the end and surpassed DI's total by far. My after-sales ironically went the same way.
So my advice: start with a 2 day sale anywhere from Friday to Sunday. Then either do another 2 day and a 1, or a 3 day later.
:-) Happy experimenting!
Way to go, Cheryl! Thanks for the engaging and concise reportage on this experiment. Be sure to let us know how Amazon does on payment - that tended to be something of an issue sometimes when we were dealing with them over the hard copy books a few years ago.
You're very welcome.
Funny you mention payment...I just looked at what I earned on Amazon for January and just about keeled over. KDP Select DEFINITELY pays and is worth it!
And I've never had a problem with not being paid by Amazon. :-)
Sometimes on my writing breaks I troll around looking for inspiration. Your 9-part series on KDP fit the bill for sure! I'm going to be doing my first promo next week and can't wait to see what happens. I know I won't get the results you did, but it gives me something to shoot for. Congrats and thanks for taking the time to detail all of this out.
